    Cloudy weather is forecast in all parts of the country with showers likely in the Ionian and on the mainland. The southeast can expect rain and storms. Winds variable, light to strong. The temperature in Athens will range between 7C and 14C; and in Thessaloniki from 4C to 10C.

    [02] Efforts to prevent war against Iraq

    While the United States is increasing its military presence in the Persian Gulf, intensive diplomatic efforts are being made to prevent war against Iraq. Yesterday, the United Nations head of inspectors Hans Blix briefed the Greek government on the course of inspections in Iraq.

    Meanwhile, China, Germany and France that are members of the Security Council, called on Washington not to haste and declare war against Iraq, while France announced that it might veto any attack. The French Foreign Minister Dominique de Velpin stated that nothing justifies military action against Iraq.

    At the same time, a big anti war demonstration took place in Washington yesterday.

    From his side the American Secretary of State Colin Powell warned the Security Council not to avoid its responsibilities during its sessions on the disarming of Iraq the following week.

    On a relative development, Britain announced that it would send 30,000 more soldiers and armored vehicles to the Persian Gulf.

    Finally, the American and British Interior Ministers appeared to agree on the idea of offering asylum to the Iraqi President Saddam Housein if he agreed to leave his country.

    [03] ND party accusations on public works

    Tension escalated between the government and the New Democracy party on public works. Specifically, during his visit to Patras yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis accused the New Democracy party of trying to distort reality. Specifically, the New Democracy party had spoken of defective work and excess of cost in various projects. From his side, Mr Simitis maintained that the projects delivered had been made on the basis of the EU specifications.

    Finally, New Democracy party spokesman Theodoris Rousopoulos spoke of an unacceptable situation that characterizes all public projects in Greece.

    [04] Banks accused of overcharging housing loans

    Alpha Bank, Eurobank, the National Bank of Greece, Aspis Bank and Laiki Bank will be sued by persons who got housing loans from them, because according to them these Banks had overcharged them with expenses concerning the loan they got.

    Specifically, according to the announcement of the Consumers Union Quality of Life (EKPOIIZO) 17 of the terms of the housing loans had been declared illegal by the Athens Court of First Instance.

    [05] ATHENS 2004 President to brief the German Chancellor

    ATHENS 2004 President Gianna Angelopoulos &#8211; Daskalaki is meeting with the German Chancellor Gerhard Shroeder today to brief him on the preparation status of Olympic projects.

    Mrs Angelopoulos &#8211; Daskalaki briefed on the same issue the French President Jacques Chirac in Paris last October.

    [06] ECOFIN meets today

    The ECOFIN meeting being held in Brussels today under the presidency of Greek Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis is expected to approve five Stability and Development Programs submitted by Germany, France, Italy, Greece and Finland, as well as the Convergence Program submitted by Sweden.

    The revised program submitted by Greece will be approved in the meeting without difficulty. However, the &#8220;15&#8221; will repeat the criticism and remarks made by the European Commission mainly concerning public debt.

    One day before the ECOFIN meeting euro zone countries described the fiscal situation in Germany and France as extremely worrying, while discussions were held on the stability programmes of Greece, France, Germany, Italy and Finland.

    Finally, Mr Christodoulakis pointed out that the economic policy would continue, as well as the efforts for decreasing the fiscal deficit in Greece. He was underlined the need of initiatives that would help in dealing with the issue of the social security system within the framework of the recent reform in the Social Insurance Institute (IKA).

    [07] Greece wins the Grand Award 2003

    Greece was awarded with the Grand Award 2003 in Norway, because Norwegians described it as the best tourist country in order of preference. Greece got 24%, Thailand 21% and Spain 18%.

    Finally, Greece's tourist advertisement has been included in the January 2003 issue of the Japanese magazine &#8220;Art Magazine&#8221;.
