[02] Clerides determined to settle Cyprus issue

The President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Clerides announced that he had decided to remain in office for more 16 months, so that he settles the Cyprus issue and sees that Cyprus enters the European Union. He also committed himself to forma an national coalition government if he was re-elected.

Mr Clerides' intention was rejected by the opposition, while according to information, Public Prosecutor Alekos Markides' possible candidacy is pending.

At the same time, Turkish Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash is meeting high resistance in the occupied part of Cyprus, following his inability to reverse the negative climate created against him.

On a relative development, the Turkish leader of the Justice and Development party Recep Tayip Erdogan warned once more that if the policy for the Cyprus issue does not change, then the Turkish Cypriots will loose what they have.

The Turkish Foreign Minister Yiassar Yiakis agreed with Mr Erdogan's statements.

When asked on Prime Minister Costas Simitis' statement according to which he is expecting a solution of the issue of the continental shelf, Mr Yiakis said that Turkey believes that this is not the only pending issue, adding that negotiations with Greece continue.

Meanwhile, the Turkish President Sezer supported Mr Denktash's handling of the issue, adding that the negotiations were taking place between the two sides in Cyprus and not via Ankara.

Finally, in an interview with NET, Press Minister Christos Protopapas stated that Ankara's disagreement with the occupied part of Cyprus had become clear, stressing that within the European Union, Athens is supporting the forces that are in favor of Turkey's European orientation.
