(9/9/2002 11:54:00 נל) [02] Efforts to re-open UniversitiesThe future of the September examining period of Universities, due to professors’ abstention is expected to be decided upon during today’s extraordinary meeting of rectors with the participation of Education Minister Petros Efthymiou.In an interview with our radio station, National Technical School rector Themistoklis Xanthopoulos stated that he was optimistic that this painful crisis for Universities would end today. At the same time, in an interview with NET 105.8, the rector of the Athens Agronomic University Andreas Karamanos stated that he would try to bring the two sides closer so that Universities would operate normally. He also stressed that the right-wing has created the parastate and now is accusing PASOK of the issue of terrorism so as to balance things.Referring to the arrested "November 17" members to politicize the trial that will follow, Mr Simitis described them as criminals without vision, stressing that the terrorist organization had been fully broken up. From his side, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis said that it was audacity on behalf of Mr Simitis to try to distort the positions of the New Democracy party. Meanwhile, in an interview with NET 105.8, member of the PASOK Executive Bureau Michalis Neonakis stated that the New Democracy party should adopt a stance regarding its cadres who are differentiating themselves from party’s official position. On a relative development, following his testimony before special magistrate Leonidas Zervobeakos, "N 17" member Dimitris Koufodinas was taken to Korydalos prison. Koufodinas accepted his participation in the organization resuming only political responsibility for its actions. Moreover, Avraam Lesperoglou will be re-tried today on the charges of attempted manslaughter against policeman Giorgos Psaroudakis. Finally, an improvised low-power explosive device exploded at the yard of publisher Georgios Tsoutsia’s house in Kifisia at 03:53 local time today. The Prime Minister pointed out that irrelevant of the result of the Municipal elections, he would not proceed with a government reshuffle, adding that he would not run for the country’s Presidency in 2005. From his side, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis called on all civilians to express their disatisfaction over the government policy. The Greek Communist party and the Synaspismos party also criticized the government policy.
