    A fine and warm day is forecast, with local cloud and possible showers or storms in the northern mainland . Winds norherly moderate turning gale force in the Aegean. Temperatures in Athens will range between 22C to 33C and in Thessaloniki between 20C to 31C

    [02] Counter terrorism police continue investigations to dismantle all terrorist group action

    Counter terrorism police continue investigations to completely dismantle all terrorist group action from 1974 up to now particularly centering investigations on an early group ELA no longer operative but believed to have links with the November 17 urban guerilla group.

    In the meantime, according to suspected terrorist member Savvas Xiros statement,

    alleged November 17 leader, Alexandros Giotopoulos might have taken economic and ideological advantage of the November 17 members.

    Commenting on hints that evidence on the ELA group in the archives of the former East Germany s secret agency Stazi were not used , government spokesman , Hristos Proptopappas underlined that all evidence was forwarded to Greek justice.

    [03] Prime-minister Simitis chairs a meeting of the economic staff

    Prime-minister, Kostas Simitis will tomorrow chair a meeting of the government s economic staff which will decide on the tax reliefs and new economic measures to be announced during the Prime-minister s traditional annual speech at the International Thessaloniki Fair.

    In the meantime, Development undersecretary , Hristos Theodorou tomorrow will begin his contacts with production sectors within the government s efforts to curb inflation.

    In a relative development , the Economic Ministry will soon begin a campaign to brief the public on the value of the euro as it was assessed that the rising of prices is due to ignorance on the value of the new currency.

    [04] Polls indicate Pasok party candidate for the prefecture of Athens ahead

    The main opposition N.D party has strongly reacted to the release of a poll conducted by Kappa research on behalf of the state television ERT which brings , Fofi Gennimata- PASOK party candidate for the Athens prefecture in the lead with 38,2% in voters preference against 24% of the N.D canadidate, Yiannis Tzannetakos.

    ND party spokesman , Thodoros Roussopoulos has accused the government of cultivating wrong impressions doubting the reliability of the results of a telephone poll which he described as a low accuracy method

    [05] Earth summit &#8211; Greek positions

    Talks to narrow the gap between the world s rich and poor without inflicting irreparable damage to the planet began at the U.N summit in Johannesburg yesterday.

    Activists with an interest in almost every issue under the sun, from global warming to genetically altered foods to the plight of the panda , pushed their agendas at a host of side events , hoping to have their voices heard amid the rising din.

    Greece s positions at the Johannesburg Earth Summit on Sustainable Development, were the focus of a press conference at the Foreign Ministry yesterday.

    Foreign Minister George Papandreou, who will lead the Greek delegation at the summit, as well as Public Works and Environment Minister Vasso Papandreou, outlined Athens stance.

    The foreign minister noted that Greece, as a member of the current European troika, would make every effort to promote environmental diplomacy and a specific action plan along with commitments and deadlines to meet environmental goals.
