Temperatures in Athens between 24C and 33C; and in Thessaloniki between 23C and 30C.(14/8/2002 11:15:00 ðì) [02] Central & Eastern Europe living a nightmareThe people of Central and Eastern Europe are living a nightmare following floods that caused the worst disasters during the last decades. At least 83 people lost their lives, while thousands have remained homeless and many areas have been declared in a state of emergency.In Czech nine people have lost their lives, while the authorities evacuated 50,000 people from various parts of Prague that are still threatened by the overflow of the Vltava. In Germany, six people have lost their lives and seven are reported missing in flooded Dresden. At the same time 17,000 people have left their homes. In Bavaria, five regions have been declared in a state of emergency, while seven people lost their lives in Austria and three in Rumania. At the Russian shores of the Black Sea, 58 people have lost their lives, while thousands of people have left their homes. At the same time, there is fear that epidemics like hepatitis and typhoid may break out, while rescue teams are trying to locate at least 4,000 missing people Meanwhile, the European Commission has decided to offer Chech financial aid and Greece will offer $150,000 to Russia. At the same time, the United Nations President of the Environment Committee Claus Topfer called on the developed countries to resume their responsibilities for the disastrous floods sweeping Europe, adding that there was no doubt that man has his share of responsibility for the changes in climatic conditions. Besides, at least 700 people lost their lives due to landslides and floods caused by monsoons in China, India, the Philippines, Nepal and Iran, while epidemics also broke out. (14/8/2002 11:22:00 ðì) [05] Police examining links connecting "November 17" with other terrorist organisationsWhile, the police is continuing its efforts in a feverish pace to arrest more "November 17" members, it seems that a member of the organisation by the name Anna will be the key for uncovering more historical members.According to various publications, the police authorities are drawing their information from the people who participated in a meeting held in Pendeli in 1974. It is also possible that some of the individuals the police is seeking were the connection between "November 17" and "ELA". Meanwhile, Interior Minister Costas Scandalides stated that the government is doing its job well and it would be better if we did not mix into its affairs.
