[02] Savvas Xiros to be imprisoned

Savvas Xiros, charged with taking part in the notorious "November 17" terrorist group, confessed on Sunday to pulling the trigger in a drive-by shooting two years ago that left a British diplomat dead, judicial sources said.

Xiros, hospitalised since a botched bomb attack in June, told a magistrate that he shot military attache Stephen Saunders in Athens and that he was also responsible for the death of ship owner Costis Peratikos. He also recognized Alexandros Giotopoulos as the leader of the urban guerrilla group November 17 and attributed the launching of a rocket against ex-New Democracy party MP Giannis Paleokrassas that resulted to the death of civilian Thanos Axarlian.

Moreover, he stated that his ex-wife and his Spanish wife did not know about his activities, adding that Theologos Psaradelis was not a “November 17” member.

Savvas Xiros will be imprisoned at Korydallos in ten days.

Meanwhile, in an interview with yesterday’s issue of the newspaper "Kathimerini", Anti-terrorist Department Public Prosecutor Ioannis Diotis stated that the police authorities have known about Alexandros Giotopoulos since 1995, underlining that developments on arrests of “November 17” members would have taken place anyway. The bomb explosion in Piraeus just accelerated developments.

At the same time, in a letter to Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Bush said the Greek government's current action against terrorism was a sign of broader cooperation between the two countries in the battle against terrorism.

In reply, Press Deputy Minister Tilemachos Chytiris expressed to NET 105.8 the government’s satisfaction over Mr Bush’s letter, adding that it would contribute to the further improvement of Greek-American relations. Referring to New Democracy party’s stance on the issue of terrorism, he described it as irresponsible.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the same radio station, New Democracy party Parliamentary representative Prokopis Pavlopoulos described terrorism as a major issue, adding that his party was adopting a serious stance. He also added that although he respected his colleagues’ positions, he disagreed with Vyron Polydoras’ statements about pre-planned arrests and handing out of arms.

Finally, the machine gun found near President Costis Stephanopoulos’ residence two days ago does not belong to the Armed Forces.

    [03] Farmers prepare for mobilisations

Farmers are preparing for mobilisations at the beginning of September. During a meeting in Thessaloniki they discussed the possibility of a demonstration on the day of the inauguration ceremony of the International Trade Fair and even the blocking of streets. However, they did not finalize the decisions.
