[02] Bush satisfied with Greece’s progress on war against terrorism

US President George Bush has welcomed progress by Greece in combatting terrorism as police come close to unravelling the notorious November 17 terrorist group.

In a letter to Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Bush said the Greek government's current action against terrorism was a sign of broader cooperation between the two countries in the battle against terrorism.

The progress made in combatting terrorism would have a favourable impact on security for the 2004 Olympic Games to be hosted by Athens, he added.

Meanwhile, the police authorities continue their efforts for arresting "November 17" member Dimitris Koufodinas. At the same time, Savvas Xiros is to testify to the Appeals Magistrate at Evagelismos hospital.

On a relative development, in an interview with today’s issue of the newspaper "Kathimerini", Anti-terrorist Department Public Prosecutor Ioannis Diotis states that the police authorities have known about Alexandros Giotopoulos since 1995, underlining that developments on arrests of "November 17" members would have taken place anyway. The bomb explosion in Piraeus just accelerated developments. Similar statements were made by American ambassador to Athens Thomas Miller.

Finally, a machine gun and cartridges were found near the residence of the President of the Hellenic Republic Costis Stephanopoulos yesterday noon. The gun had not been used previously. Meanwhile, the police authorities in Kos are continuing their efforts in discovering the arms stolen at the army camp recently.
