    Sunny throughout Greece today with a possibility of scattered cloud later in the day in the central and northern parts of the country. Northerly winds, moderate to strong in the Aegean. In Athens temperatures will range between 23C to 35C. The same for Thessaloniki, 20C to 33C.

    [02] Investigations on the Pireus bomb explosion continue

    Greek police continue investigations on the case of a bomb explosion in Pireus and the possible involvement of Savvas Xiros, 40, with the November 17 organization.

    Many suspects have been interrogated and house researches conducted so far while Savvas Xiros girlfriend was freed as no evidence against her was found.

    Police are waiting to interrogate Savvas Xiros , who is still unconscious in the intensive care ward at the Evangelismos hospital .

    Public Order Minister yesterday briefed political party leaders on the latest developments on the case.

    N.D party spokesman, Theodoros Roussopoulos said that the significant information which came up after an accidental incident should be carefully evaluated in order to combat terrorism effectively.

    From northern Greece , the President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress Nikos Konstantopoulos said that the Greek people wants responsible briefing and clarification of the case while government spokesman , Hristos Protopappas underlined the need of responsibility and not a climate of exaggerated optimism.

    In the meantime, the American State Department spokesman, Richard Bowsher described as excellent the cooperation between the Greek and American authorities for the combat of terorism, stressing that Washingthon was prepared to assist Greek police in its efforts to eliminate the November 17 organization.

    [03] Prime-minister Simitis in Ukraine

    Prime-minister Kostas Simitis , who is on a two-day visit to Ukraine, will today meet with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in Kiev. Mr. Simitis yesterday expressed the Greek government s support to Ukraine s request for membership in the World Trade Organization and closer relations with the NATO alliance. Mr. Simitis Ukrainian counterpart underlined his country s possibility to transfer energy sources to the E.U.

    [04] Issue of passport to draft evaders living abroad

    The majority of the deputies attending the first summer section of the parliament agreed in principal with the Defense Ministry draftbill which provides for the issue of a passport to draft evaders living abroad in order to travel to third countries or to enter Greece to do their military service.

    [05] Greece will get funds from 3rd Community Support Framework.

    Undersecretary for Economics , Hristos Pahtas yesterday said that Greece has overcome the danger of loosing funds from the 3rd Community Support Framework till 2005 and released a list of projects which will be financed by the 3rd Community Support framework.

    [06] Social security reforms aimed at development and social justice

    During a Pasok party event yesterday , Pasok party general secretary, Kostas Laliotis and Labor Minister, Dimitris Reppas said that a society of cohesion and solidarity in connection with development which will secure social justice was the aim of reforms in the social security system.

    [07] Community instruction 77/99 should be put into effect till July 10

    The General Confederation of Greek Labor and 15 unions of workers under labor contracts are staging a protest rally tomorrow demanding the implementation of the 77/99 community instruction which provides for permanent contracts to all those covering permanent job posts in both the public and private sector .

    The General Confederation of Greek labor stresses that the community instruction should be included in the national law and put into effect till July 10 , otherwise Greece will be taken to the European Court.

    [08] Supplementary assistance to low-income families with young children

    Low income families with children at the age of obligatory schooling will receive supplementary financial assistance with the opening of the new school year according to a government s decision.

    IKA doctors have announced new industrial mobilizations on July 8,11,15 and 19.
