High tones prevailed in the dispute between Prime-minister Simitis and main opposition N.D party leader, Kostas Karamanlis. The debate concludes on Thursday.Prime-minister Simitis said that labor reforms move within the direction of a viable and socially just solution and accused the N.D party of a lack of program and positions. The N.D party President blamed the government for being incapable to respond to the people s needs and for using double language in the social security issue. The President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress, Nikos Konstantopoulos spoke of a political similarity between the two major parties which undermines the character of a social state while the Greek Communist party described the social security bill as the bill of uncertainty and insecurity. Ships will remain docked at ports nationwide, while the Seamen s Union will today decide whether or not to continue with the 48-hour rolling strikes. Employees in the electric train have announced a 4-hour stoppage from 13-17 hours today while Athens air-traffic controllers will join in a European–wide work stoppage in protest against a plan to unify the continent s airspace claimimg that such initiative would damage national sovereignty and may be the first step towards privatization .(19/6/2002 1:20:00 μμ) [04] Investigation into the causes of the ambulance helicopter crashExperts combed the wreckage of an ambulance helicopter yesterday on the island of Anafi, investigating the causes of Sunday night s crash in which all 5 people were killed.Health Minister Kostas Stefanis gave assurances that the circumstances of the crash will be probed without delay while undersecretary Ektoras Nasiokas announced that another 130 doctors will be hired to staff state medical centers on the islands and other border regions. Meanwhile, government spokesman , Hristos Protopappas rejected versions of a report on last year s crash of an ambulance helicopter near Sunion published in some newspapers saying that the final report will be issued in 2 months. Today, state ambulance personnel will hold a 3-hour work stoppage as a tribute to the memory of their colleagues killed in the crash (19/6/2002 1:21:00 μμ) [05] Deputy press Minister in LondonDeputy Press Minister Telemahos Hytiris is currently in London to brief officials on the progress in preparations for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.(19/6/2002 1:23:00 μμ) [06] Guards to be hired to deal with illegal migrantsAs part of an effort to deal with the rapidly increasing number of illegal immigrants coming to the capital , the government plans to create 500 new jobs for border guards , within the greater Athens area . Deputy Public Order Minister, Evangelos Malesios said the guards will be hired immediately to be utilized in city areas with the highest immigrant population.(19/6/2002 1:24:00 μμ) [07] Nelson Mandela in AthensFormer South African President . Nelson Mandela, arrived in Athens yesterday for a week-long visit . Mr Mandela who will meet with Prime-minister Simitis today and President Konstantinos Stefanopoulos on Friday was invited by the international center for an Olympic truce and Foreign Minister George Papandreou .Today he will attend an event at the Athens Concert Hall for the worldwide promotion of the truce idea and will sign the relative declaration.
