Winds north-northeasterly, moderate to strong, turning gale force in the Aegean from evening.Sunny in Athens, with temperatures between 24C and 35C, Scattered cloud in Thessaloniki, with temperatures between 20C to 33C.(18/6/2002 1:45:00 μμ) [02] General strike in GreeceA 24 hour strike staged by the General Confederation of Greek Labor and the Civil Servants Union in protest against the draftbill on social security reforms- whose debate begins in the parliament today- have brought the country to a standstill.There is no public transport as employees on the urban buses , the electric train, trolleys and the metro are joining in the 24 hour strike. Also participating in strike is the Seamen s Union which has announced a series of 48 hour rolling strikes causing serious problems in the country s coastal shipping. IKA doctors will treat only emergency cases today while hospital doctors are staging a strike on Thursday and Friday. The Panhellenic Federation of Journalists has announced a three hour work stoppage today from 10-13. Commenting on the possibility of the N.D party walking out from the debate on the labor reforms draftbill , government spokesman , Dimitris Reppas said that it was not the first time the main opposition party chose the escape instead of taking a stand on the issue . In reply, the N.D party spokesman said that it was difficult for Mr. Protopappas to convince workers that deregulation promoted by the government could be translated into reform. The Coalition of the Left and Progress party described the draftbill as an anti social security reform based on new liberal direction. (18/6/2002 1:46:00 μμ) [03] State medical helicopter crashAuthorities are looking into the causes of the crash in Anafi yesterday of the State medical helicopter Augusta Bell in which all 5 people on board were killed shortly after take off.Government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas and Health Minister Kostas Stefanis expressed deep grief for the accident and promised an in depth investigation (18/6/2002 1:47:00 μμ) [04] Hand grenade attack against Pasok deputy Panagiotis Fasoulas OfficeThe organisation Popular resistance claimed responsibility for the hand grenade attack against Pasok deputy , Panagiotis Fasoulas office in Pireus causing material damage only.The police authorities are conducting investigations to find the culprits.(18/6/2002 1:48:00 μμ) [05] Euro-army issue, understanding of Greece s stands in principalThe solution of the Euroarmy issue has been referred to the summit meeting in Seville. Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Pique -who is the President of the E.U Foreign Ministers Council- appeared optimistic citing a significant progress mainly due to Greece s flexibility.There is understanding in principal of the Greek positions on the Euroforce issue said Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou from Luxembourg yesterday, following a meeting of the European Union s Foreign Ministers in preparation of the Seville Summit, due to begin on Friday. However ,Mr. Papandreou stressed that no satisfactory solution has been reached yet with regards the problem that stemmed from a text submitted to the EU by Britain, the United States and Turkey allowing Ankara to have a say in the role of the Euroforce, despite the fact that it is not an EU member-state. The Greek minister underlined that the Spanish presidency of the EU, which is concluding its six-month term, will continue its efforts but if a compromise solution is not found until the summit meeting, then the efforts will continue during the next E.U presidency as well. (18/6/2002 1:49:00 μμ) [06] 2004 Olympic Games in AthensIOC President Jacques Rogge in an interview with the Sunday edition of Le Matin referred to preparations for the the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, noting that ''on condition that they continue at the present pace ,Greece will hold successfull Games.''(18/6/2002 1:50:00 μμ) [07] Jerusalem bus bombing kills at least 14A suspected Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up on a Jerusalem bus today killing 14 people and wounding dozens.Israeli Prime-minister condemned the suicide bombing and vowed to fight Palestinian terror during his visit to the scene of the blast. Palestinian officials have always denied Israeli accusations of complicity in such attacks.The Palestinian Authority condemned the attack and repeated its position of not condoning the killing of civilians both palestinians and Israelis.The latest bombing took place in the midst of growing controversy over an Israeli project to erect a 70 mile fence on thwe border with the West Bank.
