The same forecast for Thessaloniki, 13C to 24C.(3/6/2002 11:52:00 ðì) [02] Social Security draft-bill to be tabled at ParliamentThe draft-bill regarding Social Security reform may be tabled at Parliament even this week. Labour Minister Dimitris Reppas has pointed out that the reforms are for the employees’ benefit. However, the majority of parties of the General Confederation of Greek Workers, supporting the opposition have decided to go on a strike with the Civil Servants’ Board the day the draft-bill will be submitted at Parliament.Meanwhile, the President of the General Confederation of Greek Workers Christos Polyzogopoulos stated to NET 105.8 that although the workers’ struggle has entered the course of justification, some are trying to undermine the work and positive results of the efforts that have taken place up to now. On the contrary, the President of the Civil Servants’ Board Spyros Papaspyros, who spoke to NET expressed his disagreement with the bill, while the President of the Social Security Organisations Giorgos Koutroumanis underlined that the government should understand that the Social Security Issue was not over with this bill. Greece is expected to be offered a status of approved destination in view of the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. Moreover, to be signed are an agreement abolishing double taxation, and a Memorandum of Undestanding for cooperation on issues related to defence industry and armaments. Mr Simitis, who is being accompanied by 50 businessmen attributes special importance to his visit to China, which as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council has excellent relations with Greece and supports all resolutions for the Cyprus issue. (3/6/2002 11:56:00 ðì) [05] Papadopoulos "bomb"statement causes reactionsIn a telephone contact with Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Health Minister Alekos Papadopoulos attributed his decision to abstain from the next Parliamentary elections to personal reasons. However, Mr Papadopoulos informed the Prime Minister that he would remain in office until the next Parliamentary elections.Mr Papadopoulos decision caused several reactions. Government spokesman Christos Protopapas called on Mr Papadopoulos to reconsider, while Mr Tilemachos Chytyris stressed that his stay would contribute to PASOK’s victory in the next Parliamentary elections. Finally, New Democracy party Secretary of Political Planning Giorgos Souflias expressed the hope that Mr Papadopoulos would reconsider, since the country needed him.
