In the north, temperatures will range from 13C to 24C; in the west from 14C to 27C; and in the rest of the country from 16C to 25C. It will be mostly sunny in Athens, with temperatures between 15C and 26C. In Thessaloniki it will be cloudy early in the day, but fast improvement in the afternoon with temperatures from 15C to 24C. (27/5/2002 2:17:00 μμ) [02] Municipal elections opinion polls and statementsAccording to an opinion poll by BPRC published in the Athens daily newspaper TA NEA, the New Democracy (ND party has a 8.8% lead against the ruling PASOK party.Nevertheless, Mr. Simitis appears as more fit for prime minister with 36.1% against opposition leader Costs Karamanlis, while PASOK party members have the lead against ND members. As regards the preference in votes, PASOK gathered 27.4%, the ND 36.2%, the Greek communist party 4.8%, the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress (SYN) 2.8%, the Free Citizens Movement (KEP) 2.7% and the Social Democratic Movement (DIKKI) 2.2%. In an interview with the daily TA NEA, Development Minister Akis Tsochatzopulos stated that although the people show their displeasure to PASOK, they did not take steps towards the ND party. He also proposed the election of 2 3 vice-presidents by the ruling party s congress. Defense undersecretary Loukas Apostolidis told NET 105.8 that the ruling PASOK party has many remarkable old and new members. He added that the advantage of PASOK is the level of its stands and proposals on important issues and then accused the ND of opportunism. Milena Apostolaki told NET 105.8 that opinion polls are a useful tool but do not substitute elections in any way. When citizens go to cast their ballots, she added, they vote on the basis of the work that has been done. ND deputy Marieta Yannakou Koutsikou told NET 105.8 that when the time comes for the elections, the people s preference will be determined by the growing climate of change and by the major problems that remain unsolved. During his visit to Evrytania, Prime Minister Simitis underlined that the future of the Local Administration and the regional modernization are at stake in the municipal and prefectural elections. Referring to the general elections in 2004 he spoke of a progressive majority, whom he called to rally. Mr. Simitis then charged the ND party of amoralistic politics, using a leveling rationale and of attempting to turn the municipal elections into a referendum for the government. In its turn, the ND party accused the Prime Minister of addressing messages that divide the people. (27/5/2002 2:18:00 μμ) [03] PASOK deputy Mr. Arsenis speaks on national issuesIn Melbourne, the visiting PASOK deputy and former minister Gerasimos Arsenis, in an interview with Greek-Australian media, predicted that the US will put pressure on Greece, while turkey will go ahead with provocative acts, so that our country makes concessions and compromises in its national issues, especially the Cyprus issue and Greek Turkish relations.(27/5/2002 2:19:00 μμ) [04] Bill on social securityThe bill on social security will be tabled in parliament by the end of June, whether the National Agreement with social partners is signed or not, Finance Minister Nikow Christodoulakis told NET the New Greek Television.However, Mr. Christodoulakis said that the representatives of the social partners were extremely positive as regards all the aspects of the social security financing. The board of the General Confederation of Greek Workers will meet on Friday to evaluate Mr. Christodoulakis proposals and determine its further stand on the issue. Meanwhile, the 24-hour strike of the civil servants union on Wednesday is expected to create problems in the public services. The union s demands are economic and institutional. Creators who contributed to the history of the second program will be the special guests.(27/5/2002 2:21:00 μμ) [08] The course of the 2004 Olympic preparationsThe vice-president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Denis Oswald appeared satisfied over his briefing by the Organising Olympic Games Committee Athens 2004 on the course of the organization of the Olympics.The IOC Executive Committee that met in Malaysia, also made positive comments on the issue and noted progress is made, mainly on issues concerning accomodation facilities and the construction of the Olympic Village. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Simitis said from Karpennisi that the preparations for the Olympics is part of a plan to modernize the country s administration.
