    [02] PM Simitis appeals for immediate truce in the

    [03] Middle East

    The Greek PM Kostas Simitis reiterated his appeal to the government of Israel for immediate truce and guarantees for the safety of the Palestinian president Yasser Arafat.

    Mr. Simitis further condemned the attacks against innocent citizens in Israel, stressing that he communicated with the Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Asnar in the framework of the need of a European initiative tobe effective immediately. Prime minister Simitis said characteristically that the ground of discussions could be the Saudi-Arabian plan.

    Meanwhile, the Greek foreign minister George Papandreou had important contacts in Cairo. Mr. Papandreou confirmed that Athens will continue working towards an initiative to resolve the crisis together with the EU.

    [04] Oil prices rise due to Middle East crisis

    The crisis in the Middle East cause pressure on oil prices. In Asia the oil price went over 27 dollars per barrel. In London the price of Brent skyrocketed at 26.78 dol. per barrel and then drooped to 26.65.

    [05] Social Security Funds to receive 470 trillion drachmas credits

    Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis today will announce the amount of state credits various social security funds will receive.

    His meeting with the civil servants union has been scheduled for the last ten days of April, while the board of the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GESEE) will meet tomorrow to decide on its further stand on the social security issue.

    According to information, credits in 2003 will be to the tune of 470 trillion drachmas, 40 billion more than initially announced.

    For the five year period 2003-2007, IKA the public Social security fund will receive 3.5 trillion drachmas plus 500 billion to clear the Fund's debt to the Man Power Office (OAED) and the Workers Housing Organization.

    From 2008 and onwards, credits will be associated as a percentage over the GDP, at 1 percent.

    [06] Strikes in protest against social security reforms

    The Pan-Hellenic merchant marine union and the union of seamen' s crews are on strike today.

    The two trade-unions are participating in the strike of employees in the shipyards, who protest against the social security reforms. Workers in the Rio-Antirio bridge are also taking part in the protest action.

    Consequently, ships effecting security routes will be serving emergency cases only.

    Meanwhile, employees of the Local Administration Organizations are also on a 48 hour strike today.

    [07] Inner cabinet meeting on Greece' s upcoming EU presidency

    The inner cabinet meets today in order to prepare the Greek presidency in the EU to be assumed in the first six months of 2003.

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis is expected to make announcements after the meeting.

    [08] IOC delegation visits Athens

    A delegation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headed by Denis Oswald, is visiting Athens in order to inspect the course of the Olympic works.

    [09] Aggelos Stagos nominated candidate for ERT SA

    The parliamentary hearing committee yesterday approved by majority the nomination of journalist Aggelos Stagos as candidate for the post of president and managing director of Greek State Radio and Television-ERT SA.
