[01] Weather forecast
Sunshine and high temperatures are forecast throughout the country
today. Winds northerly, light to strong, turning very strong in parts
of the Aegean. On the mainland and in the Ionian, temperatures will
range from 21C to 37C; and in the Aegean islands from 24C to 37C. Sunny
in Athens with temperatures between 24C and 37C. Same in Thessaloniki,
with temperatures from 22 C to 35 C.

Greek gold medal winner in the Olympic Games in Sydney, Kostas Kenteris
passed to the 200 m finals in the World track and field event in
Canada, breaking the panhellenic record with 20.03 sec.
[03] FYROM critical situation even after the peace accord
The situation is critical in FYROM although an agreement meant to end
an ethnic Albanian rebellion was reached last night. During talks in
Ohrid , representatives of both sides announced that the accord
initialled by the main party leaders would be formally signed on
Monday. In the meantime , FYROMs Security Council chaired by President
Boris Trajkovski authorised the most energetic offensive measures to
counter the threat to government forces.In parallel he blamed NATO of
losing its trustworthiness related to its mediatory role as the accord
reached under the alliances initiative was once again violated. In a
relative development , EU Foreign Policy Chief , Xavie Solana expressed
hope that FYROMs latest peace deal would stick and that NATO could be
deployed before the end of the month to implement it. However ,
Washinghton appears reserved after the new wave of violence last night
[04] Family allowance to both spouses
According to reports , Prime-minister Kostas Simitis is expected to
announce among others the granting of the family allowance to both
spouses during his speech at the inaguration of this years
International Thessaloniki Fair. Mr.Simitis leaves on Friday to spend
his summer holidays on the island of Sifnos .
[05] Greece does not recognise degrees granted by branches in Greece of EU
colleges
Education undersecratary Filippos Petsalnikos clarified that Greece did
not recognise degrees granted by branches of EU colleges operating in
Greece . Mr Petsalnikos made statement in repply to a letter by EU
Commissioner , responsible for interior market affairs , who described
Greeces practice as contrary to EU regulations .
[06] Baycol drug withdrawn from market.
German Pharmaceutical Company Bayer has decided to withdraw the Baycol
drug for cholesterol treatment - following a similar decision of the
American Food and Drug Association which maintains that 31 people died
in the US due to the side effects of this drug .
[07] No increase in pension age limits to equal men and women
In an interview with the newspaper Eleftherotipia , Labour Minister
Tasos Yiannitsis maintained that there was no question about increase
in pension age limits to equal men and women .
[08] EYDAP will supply water to the whole Attica basin till 2005
The Greek Water and Sewage Company EYDAP will gradually till 2005 take
over the water supply of the Attica basin due to the municipalities
inability to maintain the water pipelines. EYDAP consummers are
expected to increase by 1 million.
[09] Sale of Skaramaga shipyards
The Coalition of the Left and Progress Party has dennounced the
governments decision to sell the Skaramaga shipyards to a German
consortium accusing the government of bearing debts and
responsibilities multiple to the sale price and leaving the orders of
the Greek Navy up to the decisions of foreign investors.
[10] Change in the Marathon route
The International Track and Field event Federation has submitted a
proposal to the International Olympic Committee and the Athens 2004
Organisational Committee for a change in the Marathon course due to
difficulties in the television cover of the event.
[11] Event in memory of the Hirosima , Nagasaki holocaust
On the occasion of the 56th Anniversary of the Hirosima and Nagasaki
holocaust , the Greek Committee for International d้tente and peace
organised an event in memory of the victims at the Holy Hill of
Acropolis yesterday.
