    [01] Fire raging in Oropos

    The fire, which broke out at Sykamnion, Oropos yesterday noon is still raging with the fire fronts in Metohi-Ri, Kapandriti, heading to Varnavas beach and Kalamos.

    According to the fire Brigade' s first imformation, more than 20.000 square metres of forestland have been burnt, while forty cottage houses have sufferred damages.

    The gale force winds blowing in the area are worsening the situation.

    [02] Law allows six- month permit to stay and work in Greece

    Immigrants staying and working in Greece can begin submitting applications as of today in order to get a six-month permit for their stay here.

    The new law, which has been put into effect as of June 2, enacts rights and obligations to the foreigners living and working in Greece and at the same time speaks of penalties to those who help illegal immigrants enter Greece.

    [03] UN' s report on its peace keeping force in Cyprus to be publisized today

    United Nations Secretary General Koffi Anan' s report on the activities of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus is going to be publisized today and be forwarded to the Security Council.

    The report is expected to be within the same framework with December' s report, despite the fact that the Turkish side is trying very hard to achieve the satisfaction of its demands.

    Besides, the Cyprus issue is expected to be discussed during the two-day informal conference of NATO Defence ministers in Thessasloniki today and tomorrow.

    [04] European Finance ministers to meet in Sweden

    Within the framework of the preparation of the imminent Summit meeting in Goetemborgh, Sweden, the European Union Finance ministers will discuss about the smooth transition to the EURO and the Social Security System issue.

    [05] Slovenian President on an official visit to Greece

    Slovenian President Milan Kucan is on a two-day official visit to Greece from yesterday.

    Besides, the President of the Hellenic Republic, the Slovenian President is going to meet with Prime minister Costas Simitis, the Speaker of the Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis and Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou.

    The Slovenian President will discuss with his interlocutors about bilateral cooperation mainly in the economic sector as well as about NATO and European Union' s expansion.

    Another issue to be discussed will be the two countries' efforts on stability in the region and the situation in South-eastern Europe, mainly in FYROM and Southern Serbia.

    Mr. Kucan is being accompanied by Foreign minister Dimitri Roupel, who is going to meet with his Greek counterpart Yiorgos Papandreou today.

    [06] Simitis to be interviewed by NET

    Prime minister Costas Simitis' interview with NET (New Greek Television) today is expected with great interest, since he is going answer questions on the Social Security System, opinion polls and the relations between the State and the Church.

    [07] Avramopoulos not to run in the next Municipal elections

    Referring to the possibility to be a candidate in the next Municipal elections, Mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos stated that such a case did not exist, even if Athens became a Metropolitan Municipality.

    [08] Iliopoulos dies at the age of 86

    Following 45 days of hospitalization in the intensive care unit of an Athens Central Clinic due to respiratory problems, well known actor Dinos Iliopoulos died at the age of 86 yesterday.

    Dinos Iliopoulos was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1909 and grew up in Marseilles. His family moved to Greece in 1935.

    He had been acting in theatre since 1944, while his colleages say that he was the gentleman of the Theatre.

    In addition to his performance as an actor, people loved him because he was modest and a man with morals.

    Most of the theatrical plays he acted in were made to films. Prime minister Costas Simitis, Culture minister Evagelos Venizelos, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis and Mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos sent their condolences to his family.
