    [01] Tension in FYROM-Kosovo border culminating

    Tension in Tetovo, as well as at the border of FYROM and Kosovo is culminating with clashes raging between extremist Albanians and the military forces of FYROM. The FYROM government has imposed a curfew in Tetovo at night and is gathering tanks for the final attack against the guerillas. Last night, State Departmet spokesman Richard Robertson denounced the violent acts of Albanian extremists, adding that Washington was not dealing with the possibility of moving NATO troops to FYROM.

    European Union Foreign ministers yesterday decided an immediate diplomatic intervention aiming at a political settlement of the crisis in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, without ruling out the possibility of implementing military measures in the next stage. Expressing their deep concern over the culmination of violence in FYROM, the foreign ministers strongly denounced the efforts for destabilization by Albanian extremists, stressing that they believed in the inviolability of the internationally recognized borders in the region.

    At a Press conference, Greek Foreign minister Yorgos Papandreou underlined Greece's special interest in the latest developments in the region, due to our neighborliness and consequences on national interests. Mr. Papandreou characteristically stressed "we would all like to have the problem solved with diplomatic means, however in the case this is not possible, an expansion of the KFOR order or a new order should not be ruled out, aiming at the disarmament of the extremist groups".

    On his part, NATO Secretary General George Robertson announced that the Alliance would deploy more soldiers at the border between Kosovo and FYROM. He added that the facing of the crisis would be also discussed at the Stockholm summit meeting, due to be held next Friday and Saturday.

    European Union high commissioner on Foreign Affairs and Security Xavier Solana arrived in Skopje yesterday, while next Thursday a visit is to be paid by the EU troika. From his side, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, in an announcement, denounced the violent acts by Albanian extremists in FYROM, stressing that these groups threatened stability in the Balkans.

    [02] Kaklamanis visits Skopje

    The Speaker of the Greek Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis is visiting Skopje today to participate in the 21st Conference of Speakers of Parliaments of South-eastern Europe, which had been organised by the Greek Parliament in Athens four years ago.

    [03] Simitis to meet Blair in London

    Greek Prime minister Kostas Simitis is in London and today will have a meeting with his British counterpart Tony Blair, in view of the summit, scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Stockholm.

    [04] Vatican representative to meet Christodoulos

    Archbishop and Interior minister of the Vatican Leonardo Sandri will meet today with Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos. During the meeting, the two men will discuss the final details about the visit of Pope John Paul II in Athens on May 4 and 5.

    [05] Safety of the Spata airport given

    The safety of flights to and from the new Spata airport is given from the first moment of its functioning. This has been confirmed by all responsible persons, at a time when preparations for the opening of the airport in ten days are culminating.

    In the meantime, the first part of the Attica highway was officially opened yesterday.

    From his side the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis yesterday inaugurated an exhibition on the life and work of Eleftherios Venizelos at the new Spata airport.

    [06] Strikes in public Transportation means

    Strikes staged by public transportation personnel are expected to cause problems to the public. The personnel of the subway and the trains of the Greek railway organization have announced a work stoppage from 5 to 9 a.m., while the personnel of buses and trolleys have announced a work stoppage from 5 to 7 a.m. At the same time, Olympic Airways personnel are on a 24 hour strike today, in protest at the government's efforts to privatize the airline.

    [07] Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos visits Kalavria, Sicily

    Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos is on a visit at Kalavria and Sicily at the invitation of the local authorities. 10 churches and three monasteries attended by ethnic Greeks, are functioning in Kalavria today.

    "Olympic Games-Athens 2004-Health" programme to be presented The President of the Committee "Athens 2004" Yianna Agelopoulou-Daskalaki and Health minister Alekos Papadopoulos will present today the operational programme "Olympic Games Athens 2004 - Health".

    Mrs. Agelopoulou will also meet with the Mayors of 25 municipalities of Attica, who are hosting Olympic Games installations. During the meeting, Mrs. Agelopoulou will appeal for cooperation, while she will present a Memorandum Plan for the participation of every Municipality in the preparation and organization of the Olympic Games.

    [08] Simitis says Greece needs immigrants for Greece to develop

    Addressing an event organized by the Greek centre of European studies yesterday, Prime minister Kostas Simitis said that immigrants needed to live, while Greece needed them for its further development.

    The event was attended by representatives from countries participating in an initiative entitlted "Progressive Government for the 21st century".

    [09] Upgrading of Technological Institutes still causes reaction

    In reaction to the upgrading of the Technological Institutes, University rectors are threatening to close Universities if the draft bill for the upgrading of the Institutes is tabled at Parliament. The draft bill is expected to be tabled at Parliament this week. At the same time, University rectors are planning the suspension of the functioning of Universities for three days on the day the draft bill will tabled.

    [10] 3 ancient statues discovered in Kalymnos

    Three shepherds in Kalymnos discovered three headless ancient statues near the ruins of the Temple of Dilios Apollo. The statues, which belong to the Hellenistic period, are in a very good condition and are considered a majour archaeological find.

    [11] Summer time to be implemented as of March 25

    All European Union countries will have to implement the summer time as of 3am March 25. Thus clocks will have to be set one hour ahead pointing 4am. The summer time will be valid until October 28.

    [12] 1,70% drop in the Athens Stock Exchange yesterday

    The General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange fell by 1,70% yesterday closing at 3.072,66 points.
