THE VOICE OF GREECE 19/3/2001 11:31:45 рм [01] Simitis to address speech about Progressive Government in 21st centuryRepresentatives of a network comprising 14 countries, for Progressive Goverment in the 21st century will meet today in Athens to present ideas, national experiences and proposed solutions on the issue of tolerance and respect in relation to cultural and religious differences. The discussions of a working group will begin with a speech by Prime-minister Kostas Simitis at the Astir Palace Hotel in Vouliagmeni. Live coverage, plus interviews, will be provided by the Greek State Radio, ERA-1 ,from 8am to 8pm .[02] Tension continues in TetovoClashes in Tetovo between the FYROM security forces and Albanian extremists are continuing for the 6th consecutive day . FYROM authorities last night imposed a curfew in Tetovo till 7 am today while the country's Prime -minister warned that clashes at the Serbia -Kossovo borders had intensified. Meanwhile, NATO - led peace keeping forces in Kossovo have warned the Albanian guerillas that they would retaliate if the KFOR bases were threatened.In another development, the head of the Russian diplomatic corp Igor Ivanov, who left for the Balkans yesterday with the aim of achieving a political solution to the crisis in the region, said he would also visit Albania, Yugoslavia and FYROM. With the same aim are visiting Skopyie today, the EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Xavier Solana and the Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lind . The crisis in the Balkans will also be examined at the EU General Affairs Council which convenes in Brussels today. Prior to his departure for Brussels yesterday ,Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou described the situation as very difficult. He stresed that he was in constant contact with his FYROM counterpart ,Serdam Keri, to discuss proposals to deal with the situation, as well as to prepare for the trirateral eeting of Greek, Albanian and FYROM Foreign Ministers, to take place in Prespes next week . Finally , Mr.Papandreou said that thre was no question about a new inflow of refugees to Greece, adding though that Greece was always prepared to deal with such a possibility . [03] EU discussion on mad-cow disease and foot and mouth diseaseThe European Union Agriculture ministers' committee is convening in Brussels today to discuss about the mad-cow disease and foot and mouth disease. Agriculture minister Yiorgos Anomeritis will be participating in the meeting.[04] Reactions for the privatization of Olympic AirwaysOlympic Airways Trade Unions have staged a strike for tomorrow reacting to the privatization of the company. In support to their strike, bus, train and yellow bus employees will go on with work stoppages tomorrow.[05] [00]Simitis-Blair article in newspapersIn a joint article published in today's issue of the newspaper "Ta Nea" and "Eleptherotypia" Prime minister Kostas Simitis and his British counterpart Tony Blair are stating that the priorities for both countries are competitive economy, the development of small enterprises and the combatting of unemployement. According to both men, Greece and Britain have a mutual interest in economic reforms and their target is to combat unemployment, a development that will make Europe more competitive, will attract investments and will create new working positions. Despite the differences in the structure of their economies it is stressed that the economic convergence is becoming a reality following Greece's success to enter the European Monetary Union. As regards employment, the two Prime ministers are refering to the decisive importance of small and medium-sized enterprises for the creation of new working positions. This can be proved by the fact that two thirds of the working positions in Europe are attributed to them. Referring to the de-regulation of economy in various sectors such as the production of electric power, natural gas, telecommunications and trasport Messers Simitis and Blair point out that the procedure for the opening of the markets is not easy and draw the attention of consumers and employees. However, they point out that in the long run, consumers and enterprises will benefit from the de-regulation of the market. Finally, the article ends with the conviction that Europe is moving in the right direction. [06] Papantoniou speaks about development of regional areasFinance and National Economy minister Yiannos Papantonou visited Kozani yesterday, as the keynote speaker for an event sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce. The event was organised with the aim of facilitatig further development of the regional areas.[07] Census of country's population yesterdayA census of the country's population was taken yesterday. The National Statistical Service announced that it was carried out succesfully and reminded that those who for any reason were not home for the census, procedures would continue at police stations and city halls today.[08] Sections of Attica highway open yesterdayThe first sections of the Attica Highway, which leads to the new Athens International Airport in Spata, were officially opened yesterday by Public Work Minister Kostas Laliotis. University rectors will suspend the functioning of all Universities in the country on the day the new draft-bill of the Education ministry will be tabled at Parliament.[12] Body of doctor discovered in ChaniaThe body of doctor Sophia Befon, who was on board the helicopter which crashed off the coast of Sounio two months ago was found on a beach in Chania, Crete. Her body was identified by her father and husband.[13] Police disrupts racket in IgoumenitsaThe police authorities in Igoumenitsa disrupted a racket promoting illegal immigrants from Igoumenitsa to Italy. The racket consisted of Greeks, Iraquis and Albanians.
