[01] Easter in GreeceAthenians and residents of other cities left town to spend the Easter holiday in the country. This Easter, the exodus is the largest in the past few years.[02] Developments in Athens bourseThe recent statement of the main banker of the state of Esse Hans Rekers that Greece does not meet on a firm basis the accession criteria for Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in Europe, also urging Greece to delay its entry in EMU for another year, has caused a stir on the Athens stock exchange. Mr Rekers' statements made the round of the world from Frankfurt through Reuters news agency.The reaction of Greece was instant. Both the Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas and the national economy ministry gave assurances that Mr Rekers' statements were merely personal views which did not reflect the official position of the German central bank. Meanwhile, Reuters news agency's more recent report quotes that Mr Rekers' view is personal, also clarifying that Mr Rekers has not a right of vote in the European Central Bank which will eventually decide on Greece's entry in the Euro zone. [03] Hints about espionage in CyprusThe Cypriot foreign minister Ioannis Kasoulidis stated at Larnaka airport prior to his departure for Athens that there was no question for the Cypriot Republic, as regards the Libyan ambassador, stressing that the relations between Cyprus and Libya were excellent.Mr Kasoulidis was commenting a publication of the Greek- Cypriot newspaper Politis, according to which it has been alleged that the Libyan official is involved in espionage activities. The Cypriot foreign minister said a question could not possibly be raised on the issue, just because someone wrote something on Internet and was reproduced by British newspapers or a Cypriot news paper. [04] Plans for Athens 2004 Olympic GamesAthens mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos met with the secretary of the ruling Pasok party Kostas Skandalidis and proposed that a metropolitan body be set up to administrate Athens in View of the 2004 Olympic Games.Mr Skandalidis stated that he could attend all City Council meetings until summer, to assist in resolving the city's major problems. [05] Meeting of the Greek, Turkish and American foreign ministersThe American State Department spokesman James Rubin today announced that the American secretary of state Madeleine Albright will meet with her Greek and Turkish counterparts, George Papandreou and Ismail Cem, in New York next week. It is worth mentioning that Mr Rubin is withdrawing from the post of State Department spokesman.[06] France's highest award to Eleni ArvelerThe French president Jacques Chirak has decided to award France's highest distinction of the "Commander of the Order of the Legion of Honour" to Byzantinologist Mrs Eleni Arveler who is of Greek descent.Mr Jacques Chirak is presenting Mrs Arveler France's highest award or her scientific work and her administrative activities in many French Universities and the George Pompidou Cultural Center in Paris. [07] New measures for Greek tourismThe development minister Nikos Christodoulakis announced new measures for the improvement of Greek tourism. Specifically, taxi drivers should place a special foreign language sign with the fares or other special rates and the driver's obligations, while all rented rooms will have to provide a book, stamped by the national tourism organization, where tourists will be able to note their complaints.In addition, the tourist telephone center 171 will be upgraded to provide information for all Greek regions, while a special brochure with updated information on Greece 2000 will be distributed at ports, bus or train stations and airports.
