[01] Constitutional revision examined by Greek Premier
High level government contacts got under way over the issue of
constitutional revision, as the current Parliament retains the
authority of amending Greece's constitution. The Prime minister Costas
Simitis chaired an initial meeting with participants including the
newly appointed justice minister Mihalis Stathopoulos, the former
Justice minister Evangelos Yannopoulos, the Prime minister's legal
adviser George Papadimitriou and the re-elected Speaker of the Greek
Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis.
[02] Simitis urges for speeding up of Olympics Games preparations
The Prime minister Costas Simitis had a meeting with the President of
the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Committee Panagiotis Thomopoulos. The
Prime minister urged Mr Thomopoulos to speed up the work for the
Olympic Games, while Mr Thomopoulos said that small delays in hotel
infrastructure were mainly due to the pre- election period. For his
part, the Culture minister Theodoros Pangalos admitted that there was a
problem of time in the course of the works. He anounced that the
Inter-ministerial Committee responsible for the organisation of the
2004 Olympics, would expand with the participation of the ministries of
Foreign Affairs and Transport. Mr Pangalos is flying to Brussels to
meet members of the International Olympics Committee.
From his side the government spokesman Dimitris Reppas reiterated
that the government was not concerned with the issue of replacing
certain individuals in the Organisational Committee "Athens 2004".
[03] Bank of Greece releases annual report on Greek economy
The Governor of the Bank of Greece Loukas Papadimos released the bank's
annual report on the Greek economy, urging for the freezing of prices
and revenue stability so as to prevent the possibility of the rise of
inflation and to allow the normal de-escalation of interest rates.
However, Mr. Papadimos speaks of auspicious prospects of the Greek
economy.
[04] Charges against executives for trying to manipulate the Stock
Market
The Athens Prosecutor's Office of the court of first instance has filed
charges against the members of the board of the Athens Stock Exchange,
the members of the Capital Market Committee and executives of 15
companies The lawsuit is taking place after a ten month preliminary
investigation following press reports about individuals who had access
to confidential information and tried to manipulate the Stock
Exchange.
[05] The EURO continues its downward trend in Japan
The EURO continued its downward trend in the Japanese Money market with
its price falling in the lowest level aganist the yen being fixed at
97.08 yen per EURO, following massive selling of institutional
investors. In New York the EURO was fixed at 97.47 yen and in Tokyo at
98.86 yen.
[06] Greece does not get involved in Yugoslavia's domestic affairs
The government spokesman Dimitris Reppas stressed that the Greek
government was not getting involved in Yugoslavia's domestic affairs
but maintained contacts with all the officials of the neighbouring
country. Mr Reppas also confirmed that Belgrade had protested about the
meeting between the Yugoslav opposition and the Greek Foreign minister
George Papandreou in Kavouri last week.
