[01] THESALONIKI WILL HOST THE EU'S ORGANIZATION HEADQUARTERS
Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas said yesterday that the EU leaders
had decided at the Rio de Janeiro summit that Thesaloniki would host
the headquarters of the EU's Organization for the reconstruction of the
Balkans. Mr. Reppas added that any difficulties would be easily
overcome as Thesaloniki met all required criteria and preconditions.
[02] ONLY 29 OUT OF THE 79 FLIGHTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT TODAY
Employees of the Olympic Airways have decided to go ahead with the
24-hour strike scheduled for today. The company will procede to cancel
and merge some of today's flights and it is expected that only 29
flights out of the scheduled 79 will be carried out. According to the
"Financial Times" of London the European Commission threatens to block
part of the economic aid planned to be given to Olympic Airways due to
the slow progress made in the national air carrier's reconstruction.
[03] BRITAIN SUPPORTS THE G8 INITIATIVE ON CYPRUS
Britain remains dedicated to the implementation of the G8 initiative
for Cyprus, because it wants it to succeed. This statement was made by
the British high commissioner in Nicosia, Edward Clay, after a meeting
with the speaker of the Cypriot House Spyros Kyprianou, who briefed him
on the positions of the Cypriot political parties. Mr. Clay said that
the Cypriots of the two communities must think very carefully on how
they would look at their joint future and avoid any moves which could
lead to the failure of yet another initiative before it even begins.
[04] GEORGE PAPANDREOU REFERRED TO PEACE AND CULTURE IN PARIS
A world conference on the subject "Education and Sports for a Culture
of Peace", organized by UNESCO and the International Olympic Committee,
opened in Paris on Monday, with the participation of government and
parliamentary delegations from all over the world. Greek foreign
minister, George Papandreou, who presided over yesterday's session,
referred to peace and culture for the creation of a better world.
[05] PLANS ON TOURISTIC DEVELOPMENT NEAR MOUNT PINDOS
The secretary general of the Greek Tourism Organisation, Evgenios
Yannakopoulos, yesterday announced plans for the touristic development
of the regions near mount Pindos. The total public expenditure for the
region amounts to 154 billion dr. and includes the prefectures of
Kastoria, Florina, Ioannina, Kozani, Grevena, Arta, Trikala, Karditsa,
Evritania, Etoloakarnania, Fthiotida and Fokida. This development will
depend on the incentives created for investments to be made by the
private sector for the creation of tourist residences, the improvement
and extension of the road network, the creation of ski centres, the
protection of wild life and incentives for new kinds of tourism.
[06] INTERIOR MINISTRY'S BILL WILL BE SUBMITTED IN PARLIAMENT
According to the bill of the Interior ministry to be submitted in
Parliament soon, 30,000 employees, which had signed temporary
employment agreements, will be made permanent in the public service and
in the local administration.
[07] PAPAIOANNOU ANNOUNCED MEASURES ON THE SOCIAL INSURANCE FUND
In an attempt to offer a better service to the insured, Labour minister
Miltiades Papaioannou has announced measures for the modernisation of
the Social Insurance Fund (IKA). Among the measures to be taken is the
speeding up of processes when issuing pensions, a 30% rise of the
Foundations's income and the freezing of expenditure for medical care
at the 99 levels in order to combat extravagances.
[08] LIEUTENANT STAMATOYIANNIS DIED
Lieutenant Stavros Stamatoyiannis, who was seriously injured when
trying to land his F-5 aircraft in a military airport near Thessaloniki
two days ago, finally died despite the doctors efforts to keep him
alive. In the meantime, a Committe of Speciliasts continues its
investigation in order to find out the causes of the accident.
[09] MARGARITA PAPANDREOU'S HEALTH IS IMPROVING
Margarita Papandreou, former wife of the founder of PASOK party,
Andreas Papandreou, is reported to be in a stable condition and
improving, at the Onasio Cardiac center, after a heart attack she
suffered Monday morning. Mrs. Papandreou is being treated at the
hospital's Intensive Care Unit.
[10] STRATIS STRATIGIS WAS RESIGNED YESTERDAY
Stratis Stratigis, the chairman of the Olympic Games Committee, has
submitted his resignation for personal reasons. Government spokesman
Dimitris Reppas has said his successor would be nominated within the
next few days.
[11] PRIZES WERE GIVEN BY THE PRESS MINISTRY YESTERDAY
The leading mass media of greek communities abroad and their best
reporting pieces during 1998 were given by Press ministry prizes at a
special ceremony in Athens yesterday. The prizes were awarded by the
President of the Greek Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos.
