[01] OLYMPIC AIRWAYS' EMPLOYEES GO ON STRIKE TOMORROW
The government secures the work posts in Olympic Airways as well as the
public character of the airline, with proposals it handed in to the
national air-carrier's Trade Union Associations yesterday. The Olympic
Airways employees are asking for further clarifications, while at an
extraordinary meeting last night the Board of the Airline's Trade Union
Associations decided to stage the strike, which had been scheduled for
tomorrow. Following the extraordinary meeting, the president of the
Trade Union Associations, Athanasios Savidis, said the problems of
Olympic Airways were expected to have been settled by the end of the
week, adding he hoped peace would prevail for the rest of the season.
[02] UNESCO AND IOC ORGANIZED A WORLD SUMMIT IN PARIS
The world Summit on "Education and Sports for a Culture of Peace",
organized by UNESCO and the International Olympic Committee (IOC),
opened in Paris yesterday, with the participation of government and
parliamentary delegations from all over the world. Greek foreign
minister, George Papandreou, who presided over yesterday afternoon's
session, referred to peace and culture for the creation of a better
world. Earlier, Mr. Papandreou had met with the UN representative in
Kosovo and Health minister of France Bernard Cousner. The two officials
had talks on the restoration of political stability in Kosovo, the
peaceful co-existence of all minorities and the reconstruction of the
region.
[03] SKANDALIDIS' STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT STEFANOPOULOS
Following his meeting with the Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis, the
secretary general of PASOK Kostas Skandalidis stressed that Kostis
Stefanopoulos has proved a capable president of the republic, and
should be relelected in the post. Mr. Skandalidis criricized the stand
of the opposition political parties for being incapable to take a clear
position on the issue. As regards the New Democracy party, Mr.
Skandalidis pointed out that it linked the issue of the election of the
Greek president with that of the parliamentary elections in order to
serve its petty partisan politics.
[04] AN F-5 AIRCRAFT CRASHED YESTERDAY
The 25 year-old pilot officer Panagiotis Drivas was killed and flight
lieutenant Stavros Stamatoyannis was seriously injured when trying to
land an F-5 aircraft of the Greek Airforce near Macedonia airport in
Thesaloniki yesterday morning.
[05] MARGARITA PAPANDREOU'S HEALTH IS CRITICAL
Margarita Papandreou, the ex-wife of founder of PASOK party Andreas
Papandreou, is being hospitalized in Onasio Cardiosurgery Center, after
a heart attack she had yesterday. The state of her health is described
as critical.
[06] LATSIS GROUP IS TO MAKE ITS COUNTER-OFFER
Following the Piraeus Group move for the merging of Ergo Piraeus and
Chios banks, Latsis Group is preparing to make its counter-offer.
[07] TSOCHATZOPOULOS' STATEMENTS ON MILITARY SERVICE
National defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos is examining the
possibility of reducing the duration of military service in Greece. As
he stated, this issue, which is being examined by the National Defence
ministry, is combined with the general targets of the government's
policy.
[08] TALKS ON KOSOVO WOUND UP SUCCESSFULLY IN MOSCOW
The discussions which took place between Russian and NATO military
experts as regards the deployment of the Russian troops in Kosovo, were
concluded in Moscow with success yesterday. The United Nations
commissioner for the refugees, Santako Ogata, met yesterday, during her
first day of her visit in Kossovo, with NATO representatives and
Albanian refugees. Meanwhile, the Yugoslav minister responsible for the
refugees, Bratislava Morina, has expressed her surprise for Mrs.
Ogata's visit without first notifying Belgrade, stressing that,
according to the United Nations resolution, Kossovo continues being an
integral part of New Yugoslavia. Meanwhile, thousands of people
demonstrated in Belgrade yesterday and in the city Leskovic demanding
the Yugoslav president Slobodan Milocevic's resignation.
[09] PRODI'S TOUR OF EUROPEAN CAPITALS
Mandatory president of the European Commission Romano Prodi yesterday
started his tour of european capitals from Vienna. This tour will help
him to decide on the final set up of the new European commission, which
will then convene informally in Brussels and will appear before the new
European Council in order to have its approval.
