In view of the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair, Greeces Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis has been meeting with with social partner representatives to listen to their demands since Monday morning. The first to cross Maximos Mansions doorstep were the reps of GSEE (Greek General Confederation of Labour) and FGI (Federation of the Greek Industries). Later in the afternoon, Karamanlis will hold talks with the boards of ESEE (National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce) and GSEVEE (General Confederation of Small and Medium Sized Business). The social partners presented their views on low income earners and the revenue policy. Present at the meeting were Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis, Development Minister Christos Folias and Employment Minister Fani Palli Petralia. Mr Karamanlis will continue his meetings with top ministers, while the government committee, which will meet to discuss economy in the coming days, will finally approve the framework of his speech.

GSEE Demands Measures on High Cost of Living

GSEE has asked from the PM to take measures to combat the high cost of living and increase wages.

After the meeting, GSEE President Giannis Panagopoulos stated that GSEE had not received any answers on measures to the benefit of low income earners and on the heating oil allowance.

Mr Panagopoulos spoke of complete discordance of opinions, stressing that GSEE would not accept the abolishment of the bill and the exclusion of some professions from the list of those described as heavy duty.

From his side, GSEE Secretary General Kostas Poupakis spoke of a very good meeting, while GSEE Vice President Alekos Kalyvis stated that he had proposed the GSEE presidium not to attend the prime ministers speech in Thessaloniki.

As per trade unionists, the prime minister said that they should not be concerned as employees will not be burdened and other sources will provide the funds.

From his side, Economy Minister George Alogoskoufis stressed that the taxation for physical persons would not change.

However, as per information the PMs measures that will be announced at the T.I.T.F. will be to the benefit of low income earners, the unemployed and one-member parents. In parallel, low income earners will receive allowances, including the heating oil allowance.

Also, Mr Karamanlis will describe the Greek economy's difficulties in relation to adverse economic situation all over the world, assuring in parallel that budgetary adjustment, reforms and the support of the development will continue.

FGI Unveils Its Proposals

The FGI board unveiled its proposal which was built upon three key pillars: redistribution of state spending so that more funds can be earmarked for the low-income earners, liberalisation of all economys sectors with a view to boosting competitiveness and enhancement of entrepreneurism to increase productivity.

FGI head Daskalopoulos stressed that Greece needs to enter a new growth path, further adding that the bigger the growth the fewer the taxes. Touching on taxes, he said that emergency situations cannot be dealt with permanent taxes. He also claimed that a growth prospect requires consensus among the social partners.

Reactions by Opposition Parties

PASOK leader George Papandreou will also hold a series of talks with the social partners in view of TIF. As per information, he is to introduce from the TIFs podium specific solutions to the peoples everyday problems.

Commenting on Prime Ministers talks, the Greek Communist Party (KKE) said: "Conditions for the working class will not stop getting worse with the lousy benefits the Government heralds, the FGI proposes and the majority of the GSEE adopts. The privatization bids and the tax measures demanded by the industrial world and planned by the government will just make matters worse."

"The Prime Minister and his government along with the reps of the capital may be the only ones in this country that are satisfied with economy," read a statement issued by the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYN).

"The Karamanlis administration has planned a negative economic policy. Market growth requires less taxes and major investments. Heavy taxes have an adverse effect on Economy and Growth," stressed Giorgos Karatzaferis, President of the Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS).
