  • [01] ÉMF's Rice: Progress has been made in talks with Greece, work still required

Progress has been made in the ongoing negotiations between the Greek government and the representatives of the institutions in Brussels but "more work will be needed to narrow the remaining differences" in pensions and labour reforms, International Monetary Fund (IMF) spokesman Gerry Rice said on Thursday during a regular press conference in Washington.

Rice refused to speculate as to the time of the completion of the talks, adding that "we are moving as fast as we can".

The spokesman also rejected reports that the Fund has contacted opposition parties in Greece but said the IMF is encouraging the Greek government to "build a strong support" for the program. He did not rule out that assurances may be asked by the Greek opposition if an agreement is achieved on the Fund's participation in the Greek program, adding this is not visible in near future.

Asked whether the second review can be completed without the financial participation of the IMF, Rice said it is a question for the EU states to decide, noting however that both the EU and Greece have asked the Fund to stay onboard.

He also said the Fund is participating constructively in the ongoing talks in Brussels to complete the review.

[02] Athens to turn off lights on Saturday for 'Earth Hour'

Athens city hall, Lycabettus Çill and two more buildings housing municipality services will turn off their lights for an hour on Saturday night, as part of the city's participation in "Earth Hour".

In its message, the city of Athens encourages all Athenians to participate in the symbolic initiative and turn off the lights in their house for one hour, between 20:30 to 21:30, to send their own message for the need to protect the planet from global warming.

[03] Special traffic measures in central Athens for March 25 parades on Friday, Saturday

Traffic police on Thursday announced special traffic measures in the centre of Athens on Friday and Saturday, due to the school and military parades taking place in Greece's capital to mark the March 25 Independence Day anniversary.

Cars will be forbidden to park, stop and then enter the roads along the routes where the parades will take place, starting on Friday at 9:30, with restrictions in many roads continuing until after the end of the military parade on Saturday.

Public transport routes will also be modified on the two days.

[04] Music and sculpture at National Archaeological Museum events on Monday

In a tribute to the "muses" that have inspired artists from antiquity up to the present day, the National Archaeological Museum in Athens is planning two separature events on sculpture and music that will take place at the museum on Monday evening.

The first event starts at 18:00 in the museum atrium and is the fifth in an annual series of the tributes to modern Greek sculpture, where the work of contemporary Greek artist and its references to ancient sculptures are displayed in the museum for a period of two months.

The series started in the summer of 2016, in collaboration with the Greek sculptors' association, while the featured sculpture in March and April is Dimitri Armakolas' "Maiden of the Sea". This will be presented on Monday by art historian Nikos Moschonas, alongside a lecture by a museum archaeologist on one of the ancient sculptures in the museum that is considered to "converse" with the modern sculpture.

The event in the atrium will be followed by a concert in the 'Hall of the Altar' (Room 34) at 19:00, with the Athens State Orchestra performing the latest in its chamber music concerts for museums, featuring selected works for flute and harp - two musical instruments linked to the mysteries of the Muses - entitled "Wind, Strings and Heroes of Ancient Myth". Entrance is free of charge, with a ticket supplied at the museum ticket office.
