ANA-MPA -- Two of a flotilla of three boats were on Sunday heading towards "Cape Ray", the ship where the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons by hydrolysis is taking place by international agreement, to protest the action taking place in the Mediterranean Sea.

A total of three boats left the southern Aegean island of Crete to look for the Cape Ray - two sailboats leaving from Chania and a boat leaving from Paleochora - on Friday afternoon. The Paleochora boat ("Agios Nikolaos") returned to port because of adverse conditions at sea, while the other two were 127 nautical miles off western Crete at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

There are 22 individuals on the sailboats and they plan to leave protest banners on buoys to protest the hydrolysis and ask that the Mediterranean be kept clean and free of chemicals.

Passengers on all boats included mayors and labour centre representatives. In statements on Friday, SYRIZA deputy Michalis Kritsotakis, one of the passengers, called the destruction "an environmental crime for which our government pretends it knows nothing, allowing the process to take place."

It is expected that the two sailboats boats will cover about 200 nautical miles southwest of Crete to reach the Cape Ray, or a total of 28 hours from the time they left port.
