ANA-MPA -- Junior coalition member Democratic Left (DIMAR) is removing its ministers and secretaries general from the government, following a proposal by party leader Fotis Kouvelis, it was announced Friday.

The decision was made during a joint meeting of the party executive committee and parliamentary group.

The decision follows an impasse over the issue of public broadcaster ERT, shut down by the government a week ago Tuesday.

Following a meeting of the three party leaders of the coalition government on Thursday evening, DIMAR party leader Fotis Kouvelis said in a statement that "there was no agreement on the issue relating to (state broadcaster) ERT."

Kouvelis added that "for DIMAR, the reopening of ERT was a matter of democracy." He stressed that ERT's restructuring should be done while the broadcaster is in operation and with its staff being "present".

Following the decision to remove its ministers, Kouvelis issued a press release saying it will support Greece's remaining in the eurozone.

The country does not need elections, and DIMAR will support the country's stay in the eurozone, Kouvelis said Friday.

Soon after the party announced that it was removing its ministers from the government, Kouvelis said in a press release that "Greece does not need elections. DIMAR has fought and will fight for Greece to stay in the European framework."

He added that the party "will persist in its reformational policy and in the search for and claim of solutions within the European reality."

Kouvelis warned however that "DIMAR will be active but stand against arbitrary and authoritarian acts and policies that promote party choices instead of serving the recovery of the country, the society and the democratic institutions.
