  • [01] Memorial service on anniversary of Battle of Crete

Australian ambassador to Greece Jenny Bloomfield on Friday delivered an address at the Hellenic-Australian Memorial in the port city of Rethymno during an event commemorating the 71st anniversy of the Battle of Crete.

"Of all the events in the shared history between Australia and Greece, the Battle of Crete is the most significant. During this battle, which shaped the outcome of the Second World War, Australian soldiers joined Greek, British and New Zealand comrades to defend the island against Nazi invasion," Bloomfield said, adding:

"... It was an invasion like no other – the first airborne invasion in military history. The Germans had dropped 8,000 paratroopers in a single day. While suffering severe casualties, they eventually gained control. Several thousand of British, Australian and New Zealand troops who had evacuated from the mainland, poorly armed and battle-weary, joined the Cretan garrison and fiercely defended the shores of Suda Bay, Maleme Airfield and Rethymnon," she said. www.amna.gr

"At risk of summary execution, the local people of Crete sheltered the exhausted Australian war prisoners and helped many of them regain freedom. Australians have never forgotten the strength, the bravery, the self-sacrifice of the people of Crete. The events of those days forged an eternal bond between our two nations. This is why thousands of Australians visit this sacred island, to honour our shared loss and sacrifice," she noted. amna

[02] PPC faces liquidity crunch, management says

AMNA / Public Power Corp. (PPC) is currently in a very difficult financial position, facing liquidity problems, its management said on Friday during a meeting with ministry officials.

PPC's management told Finance Minister George Zanias that the utility was facing liquidity problems because of the country's low credit rating, noting that approved loans (worth 420 million euros) by the European Investment Bank have not yet been released because due to this fact.

At the same time, PPC said it was unable to find new capital through the banking system because of a credit crunch in the domestic financial system, while PPC has to refinance loans worth 600 million euros, maturing at the end of June, and to repay to the Greek state 260 million euros collected from a special property surcharge.www.amna.gr

On the other hand, the public sector owes more than 100 million euros to PPC, they said. amna

[03] Goulandris Museum dedicates summer events to 'approaching surrealism'

AMNA / The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, hosted on the Cyclades island of Andros, will dedicate its summer series of events with a retrospect on the major 20th century revolutionary art movements.

A visual arts tribute, entitled 'Approaching Surrealism', will take place from July 1 to Sept. 30, featuring 100 exhibits and signed by Greek and foreign artists.

The event will comprise two sections. The first - the tribute's core section - will focus on the historical character of the art movement whose contributions shaped the 20th century sensibility. The second section will focus on the literary and visual achievements of Greek surrealists.amna
