(ANA-MPA) -- Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas on Saturday expressed Greece's complete support for the efforts of the United Nations towards a political solution to the Libyan crisis, in statements after the conclusion of a meeting with UN's special envoy for Libya Abdul Ilah Khatib.

In reiterating Athens' standing position, he noted that "we cannot find a solution to the Libya crisis only through military means. A political solution is necessary and for this reason the international community must proceed with even more decisive and coordinated efforts in this direction. Greece has contributed to this direction with ideas, proposals and initiatives."

Moreover, he added that within the next week Athens will send a vessel with humanitarian aid to Benghazi, as well as a medical team and a delegation of foreign ministry officials that will be based in the eastern Libyan city, in order to act as a liaison with the anti-government forces in the country's east.

"Our aim is to keep the doors open and to have an open channel with all sides," he stressed.

From his part, Khatib cited Greece's significant role in UN efforts for a solution to the Libya conflict.

"We need support from everyone in order for find a solution," the envoy said.

The UN special envoy will be received later in the afternoon by Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou. (ANA-MPA)
