Tension was high within the main opposition party this week. In an emergency meeting, New Democracy's political council issued a severe warning towards party dissidents to watch out their steps.

Adressing a meeting of Athenian New Democracy members Thursday, party leader Miltiades Evert made clear that he wouldn't tolerate any disrespect of the political council's decisions. "The party must clean up internal conflicts, in order to follow an efficient opposition policy against a government which aims to impose belt-tightening economy measures", Evert said.

CAVANAUGH

US Southern Europe Bureau director Carey Cavanaugh was in Greece these days to discuss his country's initiative over the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue.

After talks with Greek and Cypriot officials, Cavanaugh explained the two most important points of the US initiative, after the re-election of president Bill Clinton.

The US envoy proposed that two of the "hottest" Greek-Turkish dispute matters, like continental shelf rights in the Aegean and the rocks of Imia issue, be sent to the International Court in the Hague.

As for the Cyprus entry to the European Union, the director of Southern European Affairs at the US State Department proposed to be carried out with a simultaneous promotion of the Turkey's-EU customs union procedures.

Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas told reporters Thursday that Carey Cavanaugh reassured the greek government for the sincere concern of the US to undertake initiative for the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue.

SHIP

Rescue operations suddenly changed their focus-site Friday, for the location of the four missing crewmembers who were lost after last week's tragic naval accident in the Aegean sea.

TURKISH CHOPPER

A Turkish navy helicopter crashed into the Aegean sea early Tuesday. The Augusta Bell 212 chopper took off from a Turkish destroyer, participating in a NATO exercise. Its four crew members were presumed dead.

The bodies of three crew members have already been found. The rescue operation is being coordinated by the Greek officer in command of the NATO forces fleet, of which the Turkish destroyer was participating.

The cause of the accident's are unknown yet, however it is estimated that the helicopter crashed about ten miles after it had taken off the Turkish naval warship, due to mecanical failure.

The accident occurred about thirty miles off the southeastern coast of the Greek island of Rhodes. The NATO exercise included the participation of naval warships from Greece, Turkey, Spain, Italy and the United States.

SOUVALTZI

In February 1995, she claimed to be sitting on the archeological find of the century. Fifty miles east of the Egyptian-Libyan border, Greek archeologist Liana Souvaltzi was digging to uncover the tomb of Alexander the Great.

In a special event held at Goulandri-Chorn's foundation, Souvaltzi presented her latest findings. Antenna's radio manager Zoi Kyriakou introduced the presentation referring to the work of the Greek archeologist. "By his death, Alexander the Great has passed to eternal memory. Maybe it is this memory that the Greek archeologist wants to prove that Greece can overcome any difficulties moving forward to its promising future", Zoi Kyriakou said.

The event, which was attended by intellectuals and artists as well as by the Egyptian consul in Greece, included the presentation in slides of the new findings. Liana Souvaltzi said that the diggings are now in the critical phase of the discovery of the burial room of Alexander the Great.
