CAVANOUS Southern Europe Bureau director Cary Cavano is in Greece these days to discuss his country's initiative over the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue. After talks with Greek and Cypriot officials, Cavano explained the two most important points of the US initiative, after the re-election of president Bill Clinton. The US envoy proposed that two of the "hottest" Greek-Turkish dispute matters, like continental shelf rights in the Aegean and the rocks of Imia issue, be sent to the International Court in the Hague. As for the Cyprus entry to the European Union, the State Department's responsible for the Southeastern Europe proposed to be carried out with a simultaneous promotion of the Turkey's-EU customs union procedures. Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas told reporters Thursday that Cary Cavano reassured the greek government for the sincere concern of the US to undertake initiative for the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue. ECONOMYPrime minister Kostas Simitis met with his finance ministers Thursday morning to discuss objections expressed by government members over Pasok's economy and taxation policy. In view of the new year's budget, which is expected to be released to the public within next week, Pasok's executive bureau also met Wednesday night. After the meeting, premier Simitis said that a fair economy policy is needed, stressing on protecting people at the lower end of the economic ladder. The prime minister admitted that there are pretty different views expressed within his government on economy matters, but he said that these views are necessary within a democratic movement and that they belong to the same general framework of the government's economy policy. The government is considering abolishing tax breaks for people on high incomes, in its effort to implement a socially sensibilised economy policy. NDTension is still high within New Democracy. Three of party leader's main opponents, Giorgos Souflias, Stefanos Manos and Dora Bakoyianni will tour the country in their effort to show off their positions.Party leader Miltiades Evert gave a clear reply to all his inner-party opponents in a meeting of Athenian party members Thursday. He stressed that all decisions made by the party's political council should be respected by everyone. Evert insisted on cleaning up internal conflicts, at the moment when the country faces severe problems and the Pasok government intends to impose a harsh taxation policy. The party's top members, who held an emergency meeting earlier this week, issued a severe warning towards all party dissidents, after some of party leader's main opponents used harsh words against Miltiades Evert's leadership. In Antenna's programme "The moment of truth" Wednesday night, MP Dora Bakoyianni referred to her last weekend's statements over Evert's leadership. She had proposed that Evert should resign from the party's leadership in his own initiative. "I think this could be a very good solution for the party", she confirmed in Antenna's programme. Most of New Democracy MPs asked for lower tones within the party until its congress, which is expected to come in mid-1997. SHIPCrew members of two naval warships as well as specially trained divers team focus their search operation on locating the four naval officers, who were lost after last week's tragic accident in the Aegean sea.Last Monday a ferry boaat leaving the island of Samos rammed into the warship Kostakos, sending it to rest 160 metres beneathe the sea. Sources say there are two possibilities about what happened to the officers, the bodies of whom haven't been found yet. Either they are in the place where the ferry boat rammed into the warship, and not where Kostakos sank - it is estimated that the two locations are 150 metres far from eachother-, or the lost crewmembers were trapped into the naval warship. The rescue team has already located several parts of the naval warship. One of the six Penguin missiles carried by Kostakos was located Wednesday, while its telecommunications tower was refloated earlier this week. BASKETBALLMixed emotions caused Thursday's basketball games for Greek viewers. Panathinaikos came up with a big road win in the Euroleague tournament. The defending European champs made a thriller-game beating Spain's Barcelona 79- 75.But, there were bad news for Olympiakos, also in the European championship. The red-and-whites lost a nail-biter to Italy's Bologna, 81-72. FILM FESTIVALThessaloniki, Greece, may not conjur up images of Hollywood. But, it is in the heart of European culture, when it comes to film.Greece's second city opened its gates this week to host one of the most important cultural events of the year, the 37th International Film Festival. The festival opened with special tributes to well- known directors, avant- guarde debuts and many other interesting films. Famous Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci went to Thessaloniki, as hundreds of cinema lovers watched his latest film on the big screen. "Stolen beauty", with beautiful young actress Liv Tyler, comes after the original "Il Conformista" of the seventies and the awarded "Last Emperor", to mark a return to innocence, according to its maker. "I'm obsessed with the idea not to repeat myself. A director should die after each one of his films, and then be reborn. I think that there is the same look in all my films, even if my stories and intentions are different", Bertolucci told reporters in his press conference. The director's words on the difference existing between the television and the big screen, were romantic. "There is a ritual carried out in the cinema", he said. "Everybody's going to dream of the same dream, which is being depicted on screen. It's like we're dreaming with our eyes open". Avid cinema-goers who love original film productions, had the chance to meet well-known British director, Peter Cleenaway. But this time, Cleenaway didn't show off his talents on big screen, but on canvass. The International Film Festival hosted an exhibition of his original paintings, collages and sketches. For the British director, cinema is the alter ego of painting. His paintings and sketches are inspired by his films' screenplays. "I'm always very disappointed when I finish one film and my paintings keep alive exactly this relationship of mine with my movies", Cleenaway said. "I don't go to the cinema", he added, surprising the reporters in his press conference. "I'm interested in the ideas cinema and in its aesthetics", he explained. The exhibition of the British director, who is a video-art and hi-tech applications lover, is also internationally available on Internet. ©ANT1-Radio 1996Antenna Radio News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
