[02] Launching operations of the European Border Patrols Network : a new tool to tighten up control and management of the EU's Southern maritime borders

Today FRONTEX (the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union), together with the Member States concerned, launched the European Border Patrols Network. The objective is to curb illegal immigration across the Mediterranean Sea and along the South-West Atlantic coasts and to detect emergencies at sea, thus reducing loss of life. The European Border Patrols Network will facilitate closer coordinated and cost-effective operational cooperation between the national authorities responsible for patrolling the Member States' Southern external maritime borders.

[04] What can the EU do for your city? Find the answers in the European Commission's new guide

How can European Union policies help towns and cities? How can towns and cities have a bigger say in implementing the policies? Find the answers in the European Commission's new guide for stakeholders, urban managers and anyone interested in urban issues. The guide, entitled "Guide to the Urban Dimension in Community Policies", aims to help all involved to make best use of the opportunities EU policies offer. It identifies initiatives with direct and indirect implications for sustainable development of urban areas and provides a clear overview of the urban dimension of all Community policies over the current funding period, 2007-2013.

[05] Europe's cities on front line of jobs and growth drive, Danuta Hübner tells ministers in Leipzig

[06] EU concludes fisheries partnership agreement with Guinea Bissau

The European Commission, on behalf of the Union, and the Republic of Guinea Bissau initialled a new Fisheries Partnership Agreement in Brussels on 23 May. This new agreement, along with a new protocol, will cover a renewable period of 4 years. The Commission welcomes this move to a partnership agreement that confirms the commitment of the Union to working with its partners on strengthening sustainable fisheries wherever its fleets operate. The new protocol provides fishing possibilities for shrimps, fish, cephalopods and tuna. While fishing possibilities will remain the same as they are at present for shrimps, fish and cephalopods the number of licences for tuna vessels will be reduced from 70 to 37 licences. Out of the annual financial contribution €7 million, 35% or €2,450,000 has entirely been earmarked for projects to help Guinea Bissau establish responsible and sustainable fishing in its waters. In addition, the EU will pay an annual specific contribution of €500,000 to improve sanitary conditions in the fisheries sector and to strengthen monitoring, control and surveillance in the waters of Guinea Bissau.

[07] EU27 FDI flows with the rest of the world up by 38% in 2006 ; intra- EU27 FDI flows down by 8%

In 2006, EU27 FDI (foreign direct investment) in extra-EU27 countries (outflows) rose by 35%, from €136 billion in 2005 to €183 billion in 2006, while FDI into the EU27 from the rest of the world (inflows) increased by 42%, from €95 billion to €135 billion.
