Is a communications collapse possible in Europe? The European Commission is seeking feedback on how best to safeguard our electronic networks against disruption from attack or natural hazards. This follows today's public presentation of the findings of a study which identifies a range of important issues for ensuring that our future networks are sufficiently protected and resilient. As the services and processes that they support become increasingly interconnected and interdependent, the consequences of the failure of or criminal attack on a single network or sub-system could potentially be propagated more widely and faster than ever before. Protective measures need to be put in place to ensure that critical services and infrastructure are not vulnerable to such failures, and that there can be no "domino effect" that might otherwise result in a major technological collapse of communications and the many services they support.[03] Mariann Fischer Boel lors de la Semaine verte de Berlin : "2007, année de l'action""Cette année sera décisive pour l'agriculture européenne avec la réforme fondamentale de deux secteurs importants et le lancement d'une réflexion sur les moyens d'accroître l'avenir l'efficacité du fonctionnement de la politique agricole commune." Tel est le message délivré par Mariann Fischer Boel, membre de la Commission européenne chargé de l'agriculture et du développement rural, lors de l'ouverture de la Semaine verte 2007, foire internationale de premier plan consacrée l'alimentation, l'agriculture et l'horticulture qui se déroule Berlin du 19 au 28 janvier 2007.[04] Commission clears acquisition of Jacuzzi by Apollo GroupThe European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Jacuzzi Brands Inc. (Jacuzzi) of the US by the Apollo Group, also of the US. Apollo Group is a portfolio investments company. Jacuzzi supplies bathroom and plumbing products and hot tubs. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.[05] EU, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and Russian Federation agree on fishing possibilities for Atlanto-Scandian herring for 2007The European Commission, on behalf of the European Union, and the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and the Russian Federation have agreed on the fishing possibilities for the Atlanto-Scandian (Norwegian spring-spawning) herring stock in the north-east Atlantic. The Parties agreed that the overall catch limitation for 2007 would be fixed at a level of 1,280,000 tonnes in full conformity with the advice. The EU share will be 83,328 tonnes. This agreement between the five Parties was the first such agreement for this stock since 2002.[06] European Commission staff visit their old schoolsOn 22 January, German members of staff at the European Commission will visit their old schools and have discussions with the pupils about Europe. The aim of the "EU Project Day", which was initiated by the Federal Government, is to spark pupils' interest in the European Union and raise their awareness of European politics. The Commission is taking part for the first time in this kind of initiative involving its own staff and hopes that this will also be done in other Member States.[07] From the blame game to day-to-day partnership : Commission, German Presidency and Member States discuss the key principles of EU communication policyThe final stakeholder forum on the European Commission White Paper on EU Communication, "Communicating Europe together" - is hosted by the German EU Presidency and organised by the Commission on 18-19 January 2007 in Berlin.[08] Fiji : Commission proposes opening of consultations following military take-overThe European Commission proposed on 17 January the opening of Consultations under Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement, the Agreement between the EU and 76 countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
