[01] Commission clears take-over of IBM's hard-disk drive business by
Hitachi
The European Commission has given the go-ahead for Hitachi, Ltd., a
Japanese manufacturer of electronics, to acquire sole control of the hard-
disk drive business of US computer manufacturer IBM Corporation.
[03] Commission clears acquisition of Masterlink by GeoPost
The European Commission has granted clearance under the Merger Regulation
to the acquisition of joint control of the Polish undertaking Masterlink
Express Sp. Z.o.o., so far controlled by the Swedish undertaking Baltic
Logistic System International AB (BLSI) which belongs to the group Posten
(Sweden), by the French GeoPost S.A. belonging to the group La Poste
(France). GeoPost is a holding company of La Poste for the subsidiaries
which provide rapid and express document, parcel and freight delivery
services in France and several other European countries. BLSI is a holding
company of Posten AB for the subsidiaries engaged in domestic and
international parcel services in the Baltic States, Poland and Russia.
Masterlink is a company duly incorporated under the laws of Poland and is
active within domestic and international rapid parcel services and domestic
express parcel services in Poland. (The operation was examined under the
simplified merger review procedure)
[04] Commission clears acquisition of IGC by Klépierre
The European Commission has granted clearance under the Merger Regulation
to the acquisition of joint control of the Italian undertaking Immobiliare
Gallerie Commerciali S.p.A. (IGC) currently entirely controlled by Finiper
S.p.A., by the French Klépierre S.A. Klépierre is a French company
belonging to the Group BNP-Paribas operating in lease of immovable property
for commercial use. Klépierre is active mainly in France and other European
countries. Finiper is an Italian company active in Italy in the
distribution sector of food products, healthcare and household products and
electronic domestic appliances. IGC is an existing Italian company
currently entirely controlled by Finiper operating in lease of immovable
property for commercial use. (The operation was examined under the
simplified merger review procedure)
[05] Regional unemployment rates ranged from 1.2% to 33.3% in the EU in
2001
Within the EU and the Central European Candidate Countries (CEEC), regional
unemployment rates varied widely in 2001. Rates in the EU ranged from 1.2%
in the region of Utrecht, in the Netherlands, to 33.3% in that of Réunion,
in France. The disparities were of the same order of magnitude in the
regions of the CECC : from 2.0% in the region of Közép-Magyarország, in
Hungary, to 32.8% in that of Severozapaden, in Bulgaria. Regional
unemployment rates fell between April 2000 and April 2001 in more than 80%
of the 209 NUTS 2 regions of the EU, as well as in half the 53 NUTS 2
regions of the CECC between the second quarter of 2000 and the second
quarter of 2001. The data on regional unemployment, compiled on the basis
of the Community Labour Force Survey, are comparable between the regions of
the EU and the CECC. They are taken from two reports published today by
Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg.
[07] Commission welcomes package of reforms in Turkey
The European Commission welcomes the adoption of the third EU Reform
Package by the Turkish Parliament on 3 August as an important signal of the
determination of the majority of Turkey's political leaders towards further
alignment to the values and standards of the European Union. The Turkish
Parliament adopted these important decisions in record time and with an
overwhelming majority. The Commission welcomes in particular the abolition
of the death penalty, the allowance of broadcasting in different languages
and dialects used traditionally by Turkish citizens in their daily lives
and the improved education possibilities for minority languages. These
reforms are significant steps towards better protection of human rights and
the rights of minorities in Turkey.
