  • [01] Insurance : Commission proposes to modernise and improve EU rules on motor insurance

The European Commission has presented a proposal for a new Motor Insurance Directive which would modernise and improve existing EU rules in this field. The proposal aims to make it easier for people to find car insurance for a temporary stay in another Member State. It will also make it easier to get short-term insurance covering cars bought outside the owner's Member State of residence. That in turn will help people to buy cars wherever in the EU they can find the best value and help stimulate cross-border competition in the vehicle market. The proposal would update some existing provisions, for example on the minimum amount of cover motorists must have. It would make it easier for customers to change insurance provider. Last but not least, it aims to improve protection for pedestrians and cyclists who are involved in traffic accidents. Without an improved common set of EU rules, motorists will continue to be frustrated by the insurance obstacles which currently exist. This proposal follows extensive work by a Commission expert group drawn from the Member States and takes into account wide- ranging consultation of industry, accident victims' associations and other interested parties. In July 2001, the European Parliament called on the Commission to put forward a proposal to update motor insurance rules. This proposal is part of the Commission's efforts to make EU citizens' rights to live, travel and work in any EU Member State, free of bothersome practical obstacles, a reality.

[03] Franz Fischler : "Saving fishermen's jobs demands effective reform of fisheries policy"

"I am convinced that it is more socially responsible to do everything that can be done to reduce fishing effort on stocks that are under threat, even if this inevitably means a smaller fleet, than doing nothing but just watch fishermen lose their jobs for lack of fish to catch. Inertia is costing 8, 000 EU fishermen their jobs every year. How many more jobs must we lose before we say 'enough is enough' and take the necessary measures to restore fish stocks to levels that will ensure the sustainability of our fisheries ? The reform will deliver a smaller but more economically and socially viable sector while helping fishermen who leave fishing find alternative jobs", Franz Fischler, European Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, said in London today, where he was presenting the Commission's proposals for the reform of the CFP.

[05] Michel Barnier attends Baltic Sea State Summit in St Petersburg

European Commissioner for Regional Policy Michel Barnier attended today the fourth Summit of the Baltic Sea States, together with Prime Ministers of the Member States of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS). Mr Barnier stressed the commitment of the Commission to the Northern Dimension Action Plan and addressed the challenges enlargement will bring to the Baltic region. He recalled the Commission's offer of assistance and financial support for clearing up nuclear waste in North West Russia and tackling marine pollution in the Baltic Sea.

[06] EU-Chile Association Agreement to be initialled in Brussels

The text of the Association Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Chile is to be initialled by External relations Director General Guy Legras and Chilean Under-secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cristián Barros at 1700 hours today 10th June. This step marks the beginning of the formal adoption procedures necessary for the implementation of the Agreement.

[07] Human rights and democracy : Commission lauches eight international conferences

The European Commission kicks off a series of eight regional Human Rights workshops across the world on June 10th, with an event concentrating on the Middle East, taking place in Amman, Jordan. Further workshops will be held in North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Southern Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and South Eastern Asia. The aim of this initiative is to present EU policy and programmes for promoting human rights and democracy worldwide.
