[01] European Commission President Romano Prodi met Northern Ireland's
First Minister, the Rt Hon David Trimble MP MLA, and Deputy First Minister,
Mark Durkan MLA in Brussels on Thursday 31 January 2002
They discussed developments in the European Union and the economic and
political situation in Northern Ireland
[02] EU-SUDAN RELATIONS: EU prepares for the possible resumption of
development assistance.
After 11 years during which formal development assistance to the Sudan has
been suspended, the EU has announced it intends a progressive normalisation
of relations. Future developments are dependent on continuing good progress
in the political dialogue with the Sudan begun in 1999.
[03] Support to SMEs in EU border regions - Commission Co-financing of €10
million
On 31 January 2002, the European Commission will participate in the
presentation in Landshut, Germany, of a pilot project to support small and
medium-sized businesses in EU border regions wishing to meet the challenges
and exploit the opportunities of enlargement. The project has been
developed by the Working Community of Chambers of Economy in the EU Regions
Bordering the Central and East European Candidate Countries. The European
Commission has made available co-financing of €10 million.
[04] New decision of Eurostat on deficit and debt - Treatment of the
transfer of Government real estate to a publicly-owned corporation in
Austria
Eurostat has taken a decision on the sectoral classification of a State
owned real estate corporation in Austria, the "Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft"
(BIG) and on the treatment of the transfer of government real estate to the
BIG. Eurostat has decided to treat this transfer not as a market sale but
as a restructuration in the context of improved management of State owned
real estate. The transfer has therefore no impact on the general government
deficit. Moreover, Eurostat decided that the BIG is an institutional unit
and is to be classified within the 'non-financial corporations' sector.
This has the effect that the debt of the BIG is not to be included in the
debt of the general government sector. This decision is in conformity with
the European System of Accounts (ESA 95) and is consistent with the opinion
of the Committee on Monetary, Financial and Balance of Payments Statistics
(CMFB).
[05] Novembre 2001 par rapport à novembre 2000 - Les ventes du commerce de
détail ont augmenté de 1,3% dans la zone euro ; hausse de 2,4% dans l'UE15.
Le volume des ventes du commerce de détail a augmenté de 1,3% dans la zone
euro et de 2,4% dans l'UE15 au mois de novembre 2001, par rapport à
novembre 2000, selon les estimations publiées aujourd'hui par Eurostat. Par
rapport au mois d'octobre 2001, les ventes ont progressé de 1,2% dans la
zone euro et de 1,1% dans l'UE15. En novembre 2001 et par rapport à
novembre 2000, le commerce de détail de "l'alimentation, boisson, tabac" a
augmenté de 1,1% dans la zone euro et de 2,0% dans l'UE15. Les ventes de
produits alimentaires en magasins spécialisés ont poursuivi leur baisse,
diminuant cette fois de 2,0% dans l'UE15, alors que les ventes en magasins
non spécialisés ont augmenté de 3,0% dans la même zone. Le secteur des
produits non alimentaires a progressé de 1,2% dans la zone euro et de 2,7%
dans l'UE15. Parmi les secteurs non alimentaires, celui du "textile,
habillement, chaussures" a progressé de 2,3% dans la zone euro et de 4,6%
dans l'UE15, tandis que celui de "l'équipement ménager" a diminué de 0,8%
dans la zone euro et a augmenté de 1,1% dans l'UE15.
