[03] Commission takes the lead in making formal commitment to gender balance in decision-making

On a proposal by European Commission for Employment and Social Affairs Anna Diamantopoulou, the Commission today took a decision to commit itself formally to gender balance in all expert groups and committees set up by the Commission. The decision, which extends to both new and existing groups and committees, sets a target of at least 40% of each sex in each group or committee in the medium term. The Commission binds itself formally to review the results of this commitment in three years' time and to take whatever action is needed in the light of that review. Mrs Diamantopoulou stated : "This Commission decision is a first important step towards real gender equality in EU decision-making. Results will not come overnight but this initiative shows that the Commission practises what it preaches in matters of gender equality."
