[02] Commission authorizes a joint venture by Bosch and ZF Friedrichshafen

The European Commission has authorized the creation of a joint venture for automotive steering systems by the German companies Robert Bosch GmbH (Bosch) and ZF Friedrichshafen AG. The joint venture will produce and distribute components for automotive steering systems. It will especially drive forward the development of electro-hydraulic and electric steering systems. As Bosch up to now is not active in steering systems, there are no market share additions.

[04] Equal opportunities in employment and Structural Funds : Padraig Flynn calls on the European Parliament to be more proactive

Speaking today in Oporto at a conference on equality between women and men and Structural Funds, European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, Padraig Flynn, said that whilst the European Parliament's work on equal opportunities is substantial and has made an enormous contribution to helping women in the European Union overcome the many barriers they still face, "I have nevertheless found Parliamentarians somewhat slow to take up the issues of equal opportunities in the employment strategy and in the structural funds". The Commissioner stated that he was convinced that these two developments represent "the great leap forward in years for equal opportunities at European level." He urged the supporters of equal opportunities in the Parliament to be attentive to these proposals. He pointed out that "over the past 10-15 years we have been dependent on women to fill the gaps in the labour supply. Women have accounted for the entire growth of the Union's workforce over the last decade and a half. But from now on this is not something we can leave to social change or personal choice. Europe needs more women in the workforce. This is why Member States must adopt the policies which make it easier to combine family life and working life ; why it must be made easier for women to re-train when they come to enter the labour market after a long absence spent caring for children or older dependants ; and why the artificial barriers that close off parts of the labour market and cause segregation and discrimination have to be dismantled."
