[01] Clearer job-quotas law
LUXEMBOURG - The Social Affairs Council on Thursday shelved indefinitely a
proposal to clarify EU law on job quotas for women.

VALLETA - The European Union wanted the Malta conference with its
Mediterranean partners to deepen ties, but diplomats and analysts say it will
be remembered only for a single political gesture.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Thursday it had cleared a plan by
British Telecommunications Plc, Tele Danmark A/S and three Swiss companies to
acquire control of Swiss telecoms company Newtelco AG.

BRUSSELS - British Telecommunications Plc continued on Thursday its successful
march towards building up a global network as the European Commission cleared
its Swiss telecoms venture with Tele Danmark A/S and three Swiss firms.

BRUSSELS - European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert made it clear
during a trip to the United States this week that he is unhappy with Boeing
Co's exclusive sales agreements with U.S. airlines.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to block Anglo American Corp of
South Africa's 28-percent stake in British conglomerate Lonrho Plc on
Wednesday, European Union and industry sources said.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission, pressed by Spain, will hold informal talks
with member states on a long-standing proposal to ban drift-net fishing by the
end from the end of 1997, EU officials said.

BRUSSELS - European Union food experts supported a proposal to label
genetically modified products already cleared for sale but delayed a decision
until June, a Commission spokesman said on Thursday.

MAASTRICHT - Dutch Development Cooperation Minister Jan Pronk hosts a meeting
of development ministers from the EU and African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP)
countries to discuss the future of the Lome convention, which lays down the
political, trade and aid relations between the two sides (Friday-Saturday).
