[01] EU agrees US Cuba trade row pact
BRUSSELS - European Union member countries formally agreed on Friday to a deal
with the United States to end a transatlantic row over U.S. anti-Cuba laws.
[02] U.S. stance on Cuba disavowed
NOORDWIJK, Netherlands - European officials attending a conference on
promoting democracy in Cuba dissociated themselves on Saturday from the tough
stance taken by the United States towards the Communist-ruled island.
[03] New Lome Convention being shaped
MAASTRICHT, Netherlands - The European Union and its main trading partners in
the developing world on Saturday wrapped up a two-day meeting in the southern
Dutch town of Maastricht with a call for a deepening of economic relations.

GENEVA - The European Union, lining up with the United States in a major
dispute, told a World Trade Organisatio panel on Friday it saw the Japanese
photofilm market as skewed to favour domestic producers.

BRUSSELS - Spain risks European Commission fines if it fails by June to
transpose six EU health and safety directives into national law, a spokeswoman
for Social Affairs Commissioner Padraig Flynn said on Friday.

LONDON - Prime Minister John Major is attacking Labour leader Tony Blair with
ever more personal jibes -- likening his rival to a dummy, a fly and a
grasshopper as he struggles to make up ground before Britain's May 1 election.

BRUSSELS - European Commission officials are forecasting that Italy will miss
the key deficit criterion for the single currency this year but analysts and
EU insiders expect figures next week to show Germany on target.

BRUSSELS - German carmaker Volkswagen AG plans an investment in Kassel, in the
state of Essen, to solve a conflict with the European Commission over illegal
subsidies, a Commission spokesman said on Friday.
[09] BT/MCI clearance/Commission
BRUSSELS - The European Commission further hinted on Wednesday that it would
soon clear the $20 billion merger between British Telecommunications Plc and
MCI Corp of the United States.
[10] Anglo American/Lonrho stake deal
BRUSSELS - Anglo American Corp has offered to cut its 28.4-percent stake in
Lonrho Plc, following European Commission opposition to it having control of
the platinum division of the British conglomerate, a senior EU official said
on Friday.

BRUSSELS - The Agriculture Council is expected on Monday to accept the
European Commission's cattle identification and beef labelling proposal.
[12] Calf early marketing scheme
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said in a report adopted on Friday that
although an early marketing scheme for calves had done little to cut red meat
production, it should be judged over a longer period.
[13] Fishing accords' costs may be cut
BRUSSELS - Member states must consider various options for reducing the cost
of European Union fishing agreements with foreign countries, the European
Commission said.

LUXEMBOURG - EU agriculture ministers meeting begins (first of two days);
discussions focus on 1997/1998 price package, olive oil reform, meat
inspection negotiations with the United States.
BRUSSELS - African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group Council of Ministers
meets (first of three days); discussions focus on preparations for the ACP
summit in Libreville and ministerial meeting in Luxembourg; bananas, sugar,
base products, cooperation in development financing.
BRUSSELS - Chad Prime Minister Djimasta Koibla addresses EP Development
Committee on the outcome of the elections observation mission at 1315 GMT.
BRUSSELS - Uganda President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni addresses Centre for
European Policy Studies meeting on "National resistance movement's vision,
philosophy and governance of Uganda: experience and the way ahead" at 1630
GMT.
