BRUSSELS - EU justice ministers agreed after a heated debate on Friday to co-
operate better in the fight against drug addiction and trafficking, an issue
which has long opposed the Netherlands to its 14 partners.

PERIGUEUX, France - French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor
Helmut Kohl reaffirmed on Saturday their commitment to a stable franc-mark
exchange rate in the run-up to a single European currency.

BRUSSELS - Hard bargaining over a disciplinary budget accord for countries
joining a common European currency is expected to dominate the ECOFIN meeting
on Monday.

DUBLIN - Commission President Jacques Santer said on Friday he hoped Monday's
ECOFIN meeting would make progress on agreeing a stability pact for Economic
and Monetary Union.
[05] No EU-Morocco fish accord renewal
RABAT - Morocco said on Saturday it would not renew its three-year fishing
accord with the European Union allowing a fleet of 700 vessels to fish in
Moroccan waters.
[06] BSE sheep tissue ban vote delayed
BRUSSELS - The European Commission postponed a vote on Friday by senior member
state veterinary officials on a revised proposal to remove suspect tissue from
sheep, goats and cattle, a Commission official said.
[07] Ban on sheep, goat imports
BONN - The German upper house of parliament asked the government on Friday to
toughen an existing import ban on sheep and goat meat from Britain to protect
consumers from scrapie, an illness related to mad cow disease, or BSE.

BRUSSELS - The European Union's cattle population increased slightly overall
despite the mad cow crisis, a report published on Friday by the European
Commission's statistical organisation Eurostat says.

BRUSSELS - European importers of luggage and sports bags criticised the
European Commission on Friday for starting an anti-dumping probe into the EU's
imports of various types of Chinese-made bags.
[10] Eco-friendly fridges green labels
BRUSSELS - Fridge and freezer makers who use no ozone-damaging chemicals and
make quieter and more energy-efficient machines than than their rivals may now
qualify for EU eco-labels on their wares, the European Commission said.

BRUSSELS - The European Union, responding to a Belgian child-sex murder
scandal that has made headlines round the world, agreed timid steps on Friday
to discourage the sexual exploitation of children.

PARIS - The European Commission has asked the French government to make a
number of commitments on the competition aspects of the privatisation and
recapitalisation of the Thomson SA <THMP.PA>electronics group, a French
newspaper reported on Saturday.
[13] EU reviews Textron/Kautex deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission has started a probe into a proposal by
Textron Inc of the United States to acquire the whole of Kautex Werke Reinold
Hagen AG, a German supplier of blow-molded plastic fuel tanks, and its
operations in Canada and Mexico.
[14] Marin on visit to Algeria
PARIS - European Commission Vice-President Manuel Marin arrived in Algeria on
Sunday for a two-day visit to examine a proposed partnership agreement between
Algeria and the European Union, the Algerian News Agency APS said.
[15] Zimbabwe given aid for rural poor
HARARE - The European Union is to give Zimbabwe Z$1.5 billion over the next
five years under an agreement largely aimed at helping the country's rural
poor, Zimbabwean officials said on Friday.

BRUSSELS - EU finance ministers meeting begins at 0900 GMT; preparation for
third stage of EMU including discussions on the legal status of the Euro,
relationships between participating and non-participating countries and
stability pact.
BRUSSELS - EU social affairs ministers meeting begins at 0900 GMT; burden of
proof in sex discrimination cases and implementing the principle of equal
treatment between men and women in employment and professional promotions and
working conditions (Kalanke European Court of Justice judgment).
BRUSSELS - UNICE, in collaboration with the European Commission conference on
"Company consumer and consumer dialogue in Europe" begins at 0815 GMT.
BRUSSELS - European Trade Union Confederation conference on "EMU and the IGC"
begins at 1300 GMT (second of two days).
