[01] EU agrees to open textiles market
BRUSSELS - European Union foreign ministers agreed on Monday to confirm
earlier undertakings to open up the bloc's textiles market by bringing
additional product categories within the scope of world trade rules.

BRUSSELS - European Union foreign affairs ministers on Monday urged next
month's Singapore meeting of World Trade Organisation leaders to push for more
ambitious targets.

BRUSSELS - The General Affairs Council decided on Monday not to give rump
Yugoslavia the preferential trade status granted to other countries in the
region.

BRUSSELS - Indonesia urged the European Union on Monday not to interfere in

BRUSSELS - European Union foreign ministers on Monday extended for another six
months EU sanctions on Nigeria imposed over human rights abuses.

BRUSSELS - European Union foreign ministers gave the European Commission the
go-ahead on Monday to negotiate a global information technology agreement on
their behalf, a Commission spokesman told reporters.

ROME - Italy's uphill struggle to take the lira back into Europe's Exchange
Rate Mechanism is only a foretaste of the battle it faces over the next two
years to whip itself into shape for currency union.

BRUSSELS - The European Union said in a statement it had agreed to implement
provisionally the new International Rubber Agreement from January 1, 1997.

BRUSSELS - The Consumer Council agreed on Tuesday that a number of pilot
projects should be set up to see how consumers could gain redress in cross-
border disputes without going through court.

BRUSSELS - Ireland on Monday invited Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan
to dinner during next month's European Council, but again failed to win
agreement for a formal meeting on EU-Turkish relations.

BRUSSELS - European Transport Commissioner Neil Kinnock said on Monday he was
in touch with French authorities to see if there was anything the European
Commission could do to help resolve the French truckers strike.

BRUSSELS - The European Union will launch an information campaign on Tuesday
to make the single market more comprehensible and user-friendly for its 370
million citizens.

BRUSSELS - The European Union is relying on talks with United States officials
to resolve a growing dispute over its failure to adopt GATT minimum quotas for
U.S. rice, a Commission official said on Monday.

BRUSSELS - The European Union and South Korea have struck a deal to throw open
their telecommunications equipment markets to each other's suppliers, the
European Commission said on Monday.

BRUSSELS - Malta said on Monday it had put on hold its application to join the
15-member European Union, preferring to work out a special deal for the small
Mediterranean island.

Monti hold joint news conference on "Citizens Europe" at 1100 GMT prior to the
launch of the information campaign at 1145 GMT to be attended by the
ministers.
THE HAGUE - European Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan meets Dutch Economic
Affairs Minister Hans Wijers and addresses the "AGM of Netherlands Trade
Federation".
BRUSSELS - Foreign Trade Association (FTA) news conference on "EU antidumping
policy" begins at 0930 GMT.
