[01] EU agrees to lira's entry to ERM
BRUSSELS - European Union finance ministers agreed on Sunday to bring the
Italian lira back into the EU's exchange rate mechanism, but only after making
it clear they would have no truck with a weak currency.

LONDON - The lira has made it back into the European exchange rate mechanism
but the protracted nature of this weekend's negotiations has worried European
analysts.

BRUSSELS - French Finance Minister Jean Arthuis said on Sunday he was
confident the European Union would be able to reach an agreement on a budget
stability pact at a summit of EU leaders in Dublin next mont

LONDON - Negotiations over access to the planned payments system for a single
European currency are at stalemate, with countries outside the launch of
monetary union set to face even stiffer restrictions than initially feared.

BRUSSELS - Prospects faded on Friday for agreement this year on proposed
further sharp fishing cuts to save threatened stocks after European Union
fisheries ministers said a complex Irish compromise needed much more study.

BRUSSELS - Fisheries ministers failed again on Friday to agree to a satellite
system for tracking fishing vessels and asked officials to continue work on
the proposal.
[07] 1997 fish guide prices fixed
BRUSSELS - The Fisheries Council adopted without discussion on Friday 1997
guide prices for fresh and frozen fish products as well as the producer price
for tuna intended for the canning industry, a statement said.
[08] 170 million Ecus aid for Zaire
BRUSSELS - European Union development ministers agreed on Friday to put up a
further 169 million Ecus in humanitarian aid to help refugees in Africa's
Great Lakes region.

BRUSSELS - The European Union formally asked the Western European Union on
Friday to provide support for an eventual humanitarian aid effort in Africa's
troubled Great Lakes region.

BRUSSELS - The Dutch EU presidency will host a conference early next year
aimed at defining the future of the Union's relations with the African,
Caribbean and Pacific group of developing countries.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had approved
Metallgesellschaft AG's plan to acquire full control of Safic-Alcan SA by
buying a further 43.9 percent stake from the EXOR Group.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission declined to comment on Friday on Virgin
Cola allegations that a British bottler of soft drinks which is to be
controlled by Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc is abusing its dominant position.

BRUSSELS - East European candidates to join the European Union were warned on
Saturday they could not expect special favours on entry terms and that the
bloc's most ambitious expansion yet could take place in several stages.
[14] NATO defers on command cutback
BRUSSELS - NATO's military chiefs of staff called on Friday for a
streamlined command structure to help the alliance function in the new world
order, but were forced to defer to their political superiors on how to go
about it.

BRUSSELS - NATO's top military officials said on Friday that the alliance's
partner countries in eastern Europe and elsewhere should be brought closer to
NATO planning as part of the next stage of forging links with the old enemy.
