BRUSSELS - The difficult task of ensuring budgetary discipline among countries
forming a common European currency is expected to top the agenda of the ECOFIN
Council on Monday.

BRUSSELS - Bringing the Italian lira back into the European Union's exchange
rate mechanism is so politically sensitive that EU finance ministers may have
to be brought in to take the decision, EU officials say.

FRANKFURT - The Bundesbank, moving to play down a report it was reluctant to
join a government campaign for the Euro, said on Sunday it fully supported
European monetary union and was making its own efforts to inform the public.

COPENHAGEN - Plans for a transatlantic alliance between British Airways and
AMR Corp's American Airlines will have wide legal impacts on all inter-
continental alliances to be vetted by the European Commission, legal experts
said on Friday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission, furious over "cowboy" reports of an
internal row, released graphs on Friday showing an alleged link between
unemployment and rigid labour laws but said they would be left out of a formal
report.

WASHINGTON - President Bill Clinton will host the biannual U.S.-European Union
summit on December 16 to discuss Bosnia, Central Europe and the Middle East,
the White House said on Saturday.

AMMAN - Irish Foreign Minister Dick Spring, leading a European Union troika
visit to the Middle East, urged Israel and the Palestinians on Sunday to agree
on a long-delayed Israeli troop redeployment in the West Bank town of Hebron.

KINSHASA - The European Union's outspoken aid commissioner Emma Bonino held
talks with members of Zaire's government on Sunday and said afterwards that
any repatriation of Hutu refugees had to be voluntary.

BRUSSELS - European Commissioner Emma Bonino accused the United Nations
Security Council on Saturday of scandalous indifference to the fate of
thousands of refugees in Zaire.

FLORENCE, Italy - France, Italy, Spain and Portugal constituted a joint rapid
reaction force on Saturday for future use on humanitarian and peacekeeping
missions in conflicts like the one now devastating eastern Zaire.

MADRID - The European Community has approved an alliance of Spain's Telefonica
and Unisource after Spain promised to liberalise its telecommunications
market, Development Minister Arias Salgado said on Saturday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission has cleared the proposed takeover of U.S.
battery maker Duracell International Inc by the Gillette Company, another U.S.
company which makes shaving products, an EU source said on Friday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had cleared the proposed
takeover of Australian transport group TNT Ltd by Dutch PTT Post BV.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had extended the deadline
for ruling on the merger of the rail brake systems businesses of Cardo AB and
Thyssen AG after receiving a complete notification of the deal.

MADRID - Spanish telephone operator Telefonica said on Friday that it and
Sogecable ended on Thursday their participation in Cablevision.

MILAN - The sale of Italian state telecoms group Stet could be delayed until
late 1997 at the earliest as government hopes of launching the privatisation
by next March fade fast.
