[01] BSE-free herds out of EU ban
BRUSSELS - Britain has submitted a proposal to the European Commission for
exempting grass-fed herds that are free of mad cow disease from a worldwide
export ban, a senior British agricultural official said on Tuesday.
[02] Call for increase in BSE research
BRUSSELS - Research into mad cow disease must be substantially and urgently
increased, European Union Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler said on Wednesday.
[03] Expert sees BSE persisting
BRUSSELS - Mad cow disease will probably still be around five years from now,
despite a British forecast to the contrary, but the risk will be very low, a
leading international expert said on Wednesday.

European Union which is lagging behind rival economic superpowers the

BRUSSELS - European Union exports of vodka and ethyl alcohol to Russia will
fall by nearly 75 percent if Moscow goes ahead with plans to impose import
quotas from next year, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission and Spain made little progress on Wednesday
on the opening of the Spanish telecommunications market to free competition,
which holds the key to EU approval of the Unisource telecoms alliance.

on Wednesday after rejecting Italian carrier Alitalia's case for a three
trillion lire bail-out partly funded by the Rome government.
