[01] EU vets vote for tougher BSE rules
BRUSSELS - The European Union's standing veterinary committee voted on Tuesday
for tougher rules on heat treatment of animal waste to kill mad cow disease
and scrapie, a European Commission official said.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission halved this year's allowable catch of North
Sea herring on Tuesday in an attempt to save stocks from near extinction).

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had cleared plans by
French mutual bank Credit Agricole to take a 51 percent stake in Banque
Indosuez, the flagship unit of French holding company Cie de Suez.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had agreed that Roehm
GmbH Chemische Fabrik, part of Germany's Veba group, and Rohm & Haas of the
United States could create a joint venture which would hold all the
lubricating oil additives activities of the companies.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had approved the
acquisition by Bayernwerk AG of 25 percent of the share capital of Germany's
Erdoel-Erdgas Gommern GmbH.

BRUSSELS - Seven publishing, marketing and other trade associations asked the
European Commission on Tuesday to act on its own to challenge postal
monopolies if the Council of Ministers does not agree to do so before the end
of the year.

DRESDEN, Germany - The German state of Saxony said on Tuesday it planned to
appeal last week's European Commission decision to limit the amount of state
aid provided to Volkswagen AG for developing facilities in east Germany.

DUBLIN - Irish Prime Minister John Bruton said on Tuesday the European Union's
18 million unemployed felt marginalised in the bloc's quest for economic
growth and promised to tackle the blight during Dublin's EU presidency.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had adopted a new list
of agricultural and food products for protection by geographic origin.

BRUSSELS - The European Union will restart talks this month on liberalising
the bloc's gas markets after clinching a deal in June on a limited opening
up of electricity markets after years of wrangling.

BRUSSELS - Plans to open up competition in EU airports' ground-handling
services were thrown into doubt on Tuesday when the European Parliament's
transport committee rejected a deal agreed by EU transport ministers.

BRUSSELS - The European Union has resorted to the highest technology to combat
fraud surrounding textile imports from South Asia. The European Commission
said in a statement on Tuesday it had introduced new export licence forms in
Bangladesh which were as counterfeit-proof as the most sophisticated bank
notes.

FRANKFURT - Bank of England Governor Eddie George said the European Monetary
Institute council on Tuesday discussed the relationship between so-called
"ins" and "outs" and technical issues relating to preparations for the third
stage of EMU.

MOSTAR, Bosnia - The head of the European Union mission in Mostar will
recommend extending its mandate after local elections brought rival
nationalists to power in the divided city, a spokesman said on Tuesday.
