    BRUSSELS - The European Union's standing veterinary committee voted on Tuesday for tougher rules on heat treatment of animal waste to kill mad cow disease and scrapie, a European Commission official said.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had approved the acquisition by Bayernwerk AG of 25 percent of the share capital of Germany's Erdoel-Erdgas Gommern GmbH.
