[01] G7 vows war on terror
LYON, France - In a show of solidarity with President Bill Clinton, world
leaders have vowed to give absolute priority to fighting terrorism after a
deadly bomb attack on U.S. soldiers in Saudi Arabia. In their most resolute
statement to date, the Group of Seven leading industrial democracies promised
on Thursday to crack down on fund-raising, weapons supplies and incitement to
violence and bring the perpetrators of attacks to justice.

LYON, France - Japan's Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto appealed to fellow
Group of Seven industrial nations to draw China into the world economic
community rather than isolating it.

LYON - Germany appeared on Thursday to be increasingly isolated in opposing a
plan for the International Monetary Fund to sell some of its gold reserves to
help give debt relief for the world's poorest countries.

LUXEMBOURG - The Telecommunications Council reached a political agreement on
Thursday on the draft directive on privacy on telecommunications networks.

differences made agreement impossible, EU officials said.

on Thursday on a draft directive setting up a telecoms licensing and
authorisation regime for the post-liberalisation era.

LUXEMBOURG - Germany blocked a proposed programme at the Telecommunications
Council on Thursday to promote the development of multilingual computer
products.

LUXEMBOURG - The Telecommunications Council postponed a debate on Thursday
over how quickly to open postal services to competition, though made some
progress in agreeing which mail services must be provided to the public at
affordable prices, EU officials said.

Common Agricultural Policy after the collapse of its annual farm prices
review, EU officials said on Thursday.

BRUSSELS - The European Union has agreed a a common system of EU fees for
veterinary inspections and controls on live animals and animal products, an EU
official said on Thursday.

THE HAGUE - France said on Thursday the Netherlands would have to do more to
crack down on drugs before it would agree to drop checks on its borders with
Belgium and Luxembourg and make the Schengen border-free accord complete.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Thursday it had cleared the
acquisition by American food and consumer products company Sara Lee of French
processed meats firm Aoste Holding SA and Al Ponte Prosciutti SRL from Michel
Reybier.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission will discuss next Wednesday whether to
start a probe into a proposed alliance between British Airways Plc and
American Airlines, officials said on Thursday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Thursday it had extended by nearly
a month the deadline to rule on the controversial Spanish cable television
deal between Canal Plus and telecommunications company Telefonica de Espana
SA.
