[01] Santer launches confidence pactBRUSSELS - In a bold attempt to restore sagging confidence among consumers and businesses, European Commission President Jacques Santer launched a wide ranging programme to create jobs on Wednesday, urging Europe's leaders to put the battle against unemployment at the top of their agenda.[02] EU eases beef export banBRUSSELS - The European Commission decided to ease a ban on British beef exports but told Britain it would have to end its "beef war" with the EU if it wanted acceptance of its plan to end all curbs. In LONDON, Britain dug in its heels and said it would stick to its policy until a plan is agreed to lift the ban.[03] Britain warns Germany on BSEBONN - British Foreign Minister Malcolm Rifkind issued a thinly veiled warning to Germany on Wednesday not to unilaterally block the import of British beef and beef derivatives if the European Union eases its ban on the products.
