[01] Denktas asked a meeting with Wlosovitcz; Statements on minefields and the ^ÓCustoms Union Framework Agreement^Ô

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (19.03.09) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas met yesterday with Zbigniew Wlosowicz, deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary - General and Chief of Mission in Cyprus. The meeting took place in occupied Nicosia upon demand of the Turkish Cypriot leader, who according to his own statements to the press, informed the UN official that the Turkish side was ready to cooperate with the international organization for the removal of the mines in the buffer zone.

Mr Denktas said that Mr Wlosowitz told him that the UN were expecting an expert to come to the island and begin work after having contacts with the two sides.

The Turkish Cypriot leader noted also that he informed Mr Wlosowitz about his views on the issue of the closed city of Varosha and the demand regarding opening a gymnasium for the Greek Cypriot children living in occupied Karpass peninsula.

Asked to comment on the reaction of the EU to the so-called Customs Union Framework Agreement between Turkey and the occupation regime, Mr Denktas alleged that the reason for EU reaction is the lack of information and claimed that the ^Óagreement^Ô aimed at preparing the pseudostate for the EU and the acquis communautaire together with Turkey.

During another of his meetings Mr Denkas said that the Turkish Cypriots would insist on their illegal state and added that if the EU really wants Turkey to become its member then the ^Óresistance^Ô of the Turkish Cypriots could help Turkey to accede the Union quicker.

[02] Talat says Turkey^Òs presence in Cyprus is contrary to the international law

Turkish Cypriot daily VATAN newspaper (19.09.03) publishes an exclusive interview by Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), who inter alia, said that Turkey^Òs presence in Cyprus is contrary to the international law, because Turkey^Òs duty in 1974 should have been restoring the constitutional order. Talking to Ertem Kasimoglu, VATAN^Òs director and editor-in-chief, Mr Talat supported that Turkey should solve the Cyprus problem so that it enters the EU and become a regional power. The following dialogue took place between Mr Talat and Mr Kasimoglu.

^ÓTalat: If Turkey has the pretension to be a regional power, it is not possible for it to be in dispute with the international law. Therefore it has to solve the Cyprus problem.

Kasimoglu: But the international law is not only the European Union.

Talat: I did not mention at all the EU. If it is going to play any role during this century, when there is only one superpower, then Turkey has to solve the Cyprus problem. What is the relation of the Loizidou case with the EU?

Kasimoglu: Do you want to say that Turkey^Òs presence in Cyprus is unjust according to the international law?

    Talat: Is it not so?

    Kasimoglu: Of course not.

    Talat: Really?

Kasimoglu: Turkey^Òs presence on the island today is a right given to it by the international law.

Talat: One moment. The international agreements give, Turkey the duty to protect the 1960 status of the island. Excuse me. Therefore, do not tell me that Turkey^Òs presence here is in accordance with the international law. There is only this: If Turkey was not in dispute with the international law because of Cyprus, then there would be no Greek Cypriot queue at the European Court of Human Rights. There is the Loizidou case and much more. Turkey received serious warnings. ^ÅOn what basis Turkey is in Cyprus?

Kasimoglu: Of course on the basis of agreements and the international law.

Talat: Do the 1960 agreements provide for Turkey^Òs preserving the present status quo in Cyprus? ^Å^Ô

[03] Talat accuses Denktas of not wanting a solution to the Cyprus problem because of personal interests

In a written statement issued yesterday, Mr Talat referred to the recent scandal revealed by the Turkish mainland YENI SAFAK newspaper, which wrote that Mr Denktas had sold Greek Cypriot land in the occupied Kyrenia region to companies from Turkey.

Mr Talat said that the relations of Mr Denktas with some circles in Turkey, which ensured him benefit, as came to light recently, show why the Turkish Cypriot leader insists on the global exchange of properties.

Mr Talat added referring to Mr Denktas: ^ÓWhen his illegal actions come to light, in his effort to hide them he attacks us, who want a bright future for the Turkish Cypriots and a new Cyprus. However, he cannot hide his crimes by attacking other people. ^Å^Ô.
