[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Cem on S-300, Turkish-EU relationsAccording to KIBRIS (22.10.98) Turkish Foreign Minister, Ismail Cem, has claimed that the Greek Cypriots, by ordering the S-300 missiles, have brought trouble upon themselves. Cem claimed that a ``renewal'' is being experienced in the Turkish foreign policy in the last 15 months.Referring to the Cyprus problem, Cem claimed that ``the Cyprus government, which signed an agreement to purchase the S-300 missiles from Russia, does not know what to do with these missiles''. He stated that Turkey has the most dynamic economy and the largest army in the region. There are countries whose armies are technologically better than Turkey´s, however, he added, Turkey has the largest and the strongest army. Cem also claimed that Turkey has the most deep-rooted democracy in the region. Regarding Turkey´s relations with the European Union, Cem said that Turkey should get rid of the fixed idea of ``we will be an EU member, we will be European''. Turkey should not try to prove that it is European, he said. ``We are already European. We have been European for 700 years now. We do not need other peoples´approval of this fact'', Cem declared. The Turkish Foreign Minister claimed that as a result of Turkey´s firm and serious policies regarding Europe, an important distance has been covered in Turkey´s European relations. Cem said that the EU and Turkey need each other. (MY) [02] Ann Hercus-Denktash meetingAccording to KIBRIS (22.10.98) the UN Secretary General´s deputy special representative in Cyprus, Dame Ann Hercus, had a meeting yesterday with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.After the meeting Dame Hercus refused to make any statement in line with her secrecy pledge. She only said: ``I met Denktash a while ago. We will come together again on Friday''. (MY) [03] Poll on issues that mostly concern pseudostate´s populationKIBRIS (22.10.98) publishes another poll conducted by ``COMAR'' in which 1372 people were questioned about what were the main domestic issues that concern them. (MY) [04] Hercus makes donation to HELP AssociationAccording to KIBRIS (22.10.98) Dame Ann Hercus has donated 28.5 million TL to the HELP Association established in 1989 in occupied Kyrenia in the name of the Family and Social Services Aid organization operating under the UN Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus.The donation was given to the Chairwoman of the HELP Association Laura Berkant. Marilyn Hayes is the founder of the HELP. (MY) [05] Training for ``civil defence'' personnelAccording to KIBRIS (22.10.98) the so-called Civil Defence Organization in the occupied area started a training program to increase staff capabilities.KIBRIS says that ``Civil Defence'' personnel are receiving training on first aid, life saving, the putting off of fires, communication etc. The training program which started on 20 October will last one month. It will end on 20 November, and it will provide training to 1600 people.
