    [01] Cem on S-300, Turkish-EU relations

According to KIBRIS (22.10.98) Turkish Foreign Minister, Ismail Cem, has claimed that the Greek Cypriots, by ordering the S-300 missiles, have brought trouble upon themselves. Cem claimed that a ``renewal'' is being experienced in the Turkish foreign policy in the last 15 months.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, Cem claimed that ``the Cyprus government, which signed an agreement to purchase the S-300 missiles from Russia, does not know what to do with these missiles''.

He stated that Turkey has the most dynamic economy and the largest army in the region. There are countries whose armies are technologically better than Turkey´s, however, he added, Turkey has the largest and the strongest army.

Cem also claimed that Turkey has the most deep-rooted democracy in the region.

Regarding Turkey´s relations with the European Union, Cem said that Turkey should get rid of the fixed idea of ``we will be an EU member, we will be European''. Turkey should not try to prove that it is European, he said. ``We are already European. We have been European for 700 years now. We do not need other peoples´approval of this fact'', Cem declared.

The Turkish Foreign Minister claimed that as a result of Turkey´s firm and serious policies regarding Europe, an important distance has been covered in Turkey´s European relations.

Cem said that the EU and Turkey need each other. (MY)

[03] Poll on issues that mostly concern pseudostate´s population

KIBRIS (22.10.98) publishes another poll conducted by ``COMAR'' in which 1372 people were questioned about what were the main domestic issues that concern them. The main problem that worried people in the occupied area was unemployment (47.8%).
    Problems Most important	Second most
    			problem important problem
    Unemployment 47.8 14.7
    Buying power/inflation	16.4 28.8
