    [02] SEREZIS SPEAKS

Government Spokesman, Costas Serezis, submitted his resignation to President Glafcos Clerides three times over the past four days, but the President refused to accept it.

Mr Serezis spoke today about the problem with the Democratic Rally, saying that President Clerides wants to promote a national interest policy, while the ruling party follows an internal consumption line.

He said that the Democratic Rally uses the Government Spokesmen as scapegoats to tackle some of its own problems.

Mr Serezis said that he had been silent until today, adding that he did not feel ungrateful, as the Democratic Rally leader had described him.

The ruling party responded to Mr Serezis' statements today with a short announcement, saying it did not deal with things of the past.

    [03] DAME ANN

Dame Ann Hercus gave in her resignation to UN Secretary-General on July 14.

A new Special Representative will be appointed in August, while Americans and British reassure that nothing will change regarding the talks expected to be called by the UN chief.

Government Spokesman, Costas Serezis, said today that the dialogue may be delayed by this development.

Mr Serezis said that President Glafcos Clerides believes that the UN chief will not invited the two sides to talks before diplomatic moves towards Ankara are concluded by members of the UN Security Council.

A British High Commissioner spokesman said that London and other interested parties remain committed to supporting UN efforts for a new round of talks.

    [04] RODOUSAKIS

Greek Ambassador, Kyriakos Rodousakis, said that the modern F-16s can cover the whole area of Greece and Cyprus, and advised against discussing defence matters in public.

Mr Rodousakis was responding to questions after a meeting with New Horizons President, Nicos Koutsou, with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem and the Joint Defence Pact.

Referring to expected developments on the Cyprus problem, Mr Rodousakis said that the resignation of Dame Ann Hercus will not delay or create any implications in the fresh effort to restart talks.

Mr Koutsou said that things may worsen with the appointing of a new Special Representative, as they did with the departure of Gustave Feissel.

A US Embassy spokesman said that the United States call on the UN Secretary-General to appoint a new Special Representative as soon as possible.

    [05] KYPRIANOU TZUR

House of Representatives President, Spyros Kyprianou, and Israeli Ambassador, Shemi Tzur, today discussed the Cyprus problem and the Middle East peace process.

Mr Tzur expressed optimism about the Middle East peace process and invited Mr Kyprianou, on behalf of the Speaker of the Knesset, to visit Israel.

He said that this reflects the close ties between the two countries.

Referring to the two Mossad agents serving prison sentences in Cyprus, Mr Tzur said that from the day they were arrested until the day they will be released, Israel will request that they be pardoned.

    [06] KASOULIDES

Political leaders from 40 countries began arriving in Sarajevo for tomorrow's summit on the stability pact for the Balkans.

Cyprus will be represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ioannis Kasoulides, who will fly to Sarajevo via Athens.

US President, Bill Clinton, and British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, are among the 40 political leaders to attend the summit.

During their stay in Sarajevo, Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Papandreou, and his Turkish counterpart, Ismail Cem, will meet to discuss Greco-Turkish relations.

Today, the second round of the Greco-Turkish dialogue began in Athens, on the cooperation of the two countries on certain issues.

The issue of terrorism, which was discussed today, is also on tomorrow's agenda

    [07] NATO ALBANIANS

NATO is holding three Kosovo Albanians for further investigation in connection with the murder of 14 Serb farmers last week.

Two other ethnic Albanians among the five arrested in southern Kosovo yesterday were freed after questioning.

The farmers were mown down with automatic weapons in a cornfield on Friday night.

US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, who played a key role in NATO's decision to wage war in the Balkans, arrived in Kosovo today and urged Serbs to stay in the province to help create a multi-ethnic society.

    [08] MONEY

Dealings at the Cyprus Stock Exchanged dropped today, as well as the general price index.

Exchanges reached 41,7 million pounds, 27 million less than yesterday, while the index closed at 271,79 units.

Banking institutions again took the lion's share of today's dealings.

Meanwhile, Greek media reported that capital from the Athens Stock Exchange are being channelled through the Cyprus Stock Exchange.

Also, the Hellenic Bank announced today that it would buy Ledra Insurance shares, thus strengthening its status in the insurance business.

The deal means that the Hellenic Bank will issue 200 thousand new shares in return for the total of the Ledra shares.

    [09] TURKS WORKS

The Turkish occupation troops are carrying out new fortification works at the village of Kokkina.

A Turkish vessel sailed into Kokkina this morning and unloaded machinery used in the works.

The same vessel arrived in the area three times this month.

The boat sailed out of Kokkina taking with it an earth-shifter, which it had unloaded last month.

The National Guard, which is closely monitoring Turkish moves, has made representations to the United Nations.

In a few days is the anniversary of the bombing of the area by the Turkish airforce, in 1964.

    [10] SHIPWRECKED

Police efforts today to find the two missing members of the sunken "Rofaida" cargo ship crew were unsuccessful.

The ship sunk yesterday 22 nautical miles off the coast of Larnaca.

Police helicopters and vessels continued the search all day around the spot where the "Rofaida" went down.

According to the captain and the other five members of the crew that were rescued, the two missing sailors were in the hold when an explosion sunk the ship.

One of the missing may have managed to jump into the sea before the ship went down.

    [11] QUAKE

An earthquake measuring 4,4 on the Richter Scale was felt this morning in the town and area of Limassol.

The epicentre of the tremor was between the villages of Pahna and Prastio.

    [12] WEATHER TV

Tomorrow will be mainly fine. In the afternoon clouds will form over the mountains, possibly yielding some rain.

There will be a moderate sea breeze of four to five beaufort, and the sea will be slight to moderate.

The temperature will reach 36 degrees inland, 31 on the coast, and 26 over the mountains.

The fire hazard is extremely high in all forest areas.
