He added that Washington is making every possible action to facilitate participation by both sides in talks,

Referring to the UN security Council decisions on Cyprus, Miller said he does not look upon them as an effort but rather as a catalyst which will in sopuire talks.

The US envoy also underlined that the position of the United States has not changed its position in support of a bizonal and bicommunal federation with one sovereignty, adding that neither will it be changed,.

[03] KYPRIANOU

He said this is the conclusion he has had after meeting Greek alternate foreign minister Yiannos Kranidiotis during his visit to Athens.

Kyprianou went on to say that the recent Thomas Miller statements indicate that what is being sought is to give Turkey the opportunity to place the confederation issue on the table of negotiations.

[04] KYPRIANOU ATHENS

The cycle of talks end in a meeting with New Democracy opposition party leader Costas Karamanlis.

Kyprianou underlined the need to find ways out of the vice which is aimed at confederation.

[05] ECEVIT

In briefing his own parliamentary group, Ecevit presented a conciliatory

stand in respect of messages which, he said, come from Greece, which, he argued, until now did not even want to refer to a dialogue.

He added that today there is a tendency towards dialogue and described this as a pleasant surprise.

This dialogue is being conducted on exploratory subjects and will be transferred to Athens on Friday.

In an effort to overthrow the climate created during the Italian-Turkish talks after the Ocalan case, the Turkish prime minister also referred to the Italian support of Ankara's request for accession to the EU.

The Italian prime minister Ecevit added, sent him a letter in which he said Italy looks upon Turkey as a friendly country, an ally within NATO, and as a future partner in the EU.

[06] HOUSE STOCK EXCHANGE

The committee meeting in special session discussed conditions now established within CyEX on a motion tabled by Committee chairman Alexis Galanos and DISY MP Prodromos prodromou.

HAK Chairman Dinos Papadopoulos criticised brokers who undertake transactions way over their own capabilities to conclude, and also described the Exchange's closing for two days as unacceptable.

He added that exchanges which close gain the international reputation of being problematic.

Stavros Agrotis, representing brokerage establishments, said they are working double shifts under an unprecedented volume of work and recommended the CyEX close for 10 days so that the situation may be cleared up/

[07] GIZIKIS

He had been appointed to the position of President by the Athens Junta in November 1973 after the overthrow of the George Papadopoulos regime by Demetrios Ioannides.

In an interview in August 1997 Gizikis revealed that he had planned the overthrow of Makarios with Ioannides and other junta members for whole months, adding that he personally gave the order for it.

He had also said that he felt no qualms for the crime committed against Cyprus, because he simply believed that the decision was simply to overthrow Makarios.

[08] SEREZIS

He added that it was with the advise of the President that he does what he does and that his stay at his post was jointly decided with the President.

Serezis went on to say that he did and continues to take his own decisions independently from DIST chairman Anastassiades and announces them when he thinks the time is right.

He also said that if the attack against him came from the government then his decision and stand would have been different, stressing that Anastassiades is not the government.

[09] PORTS

However, certain differences over incentives remained after the meeting with the minister of communications and works, Leondios Ierodiakonou which discussed the issues.

The minister said after the meeting that it was agreed to establish a subcommittee to study certain issues which need further discussion and a neew meet8ng will be held next Wednesday.

Port Authority President Dinos Erotokritou said acceptance of the shift system is a positive development while trade union representatives said what remains is to agree on conditions of implementation of the system, hoping that a final agreement will be reached on Wednesday.

[10] MIDEAST

The two met yesterday at the Erez border post between Israel and Gaza, after which Barak told the press that Arafat was due to reply to his proposals in two weeks.

However, the Palestinian leader stated he is not likely to re discuss agreements that have already been signed.

The Palestinian side concentrates the talks on the need for immediate implementation not only of the entire Wye Plantation agreement but also of all the others agreed between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

[11] SHIP

An air and sea search for the missing crew members continues by helicopters and launches.

Those rescued were sighted on a wooden raft and were taken to Larnaca marina this afternoon. They stated they were on the raft since three this morning after an engine room explosion which started a fire in the ship.

The captain ordered the crew to abandon ship and they followed him while the other two were nowhere to be found.

Those rescued were reported in good condition and made statements to the police.

The Rowenta which went down just before eight this morning was in the Limassol roads for revictaslling since July 24, sailed yesterday afternoon with three thousand tons of sesame seed for Latakia in Syria.

[12] WEATHER

Winds will be North Westerly light and the sea slight.

Temperatures will drop to 22 C inland and on the South coast, to 19 C on the West coast and to 18 C over the higher mountains.

The weather will remain clear tomorrow with light and variable winds in the morning, gradually becoming moderate sea breezes.

The sea will become moderate on the South coast in the afternoon.

Temperatures will rise to 35 C inland, 32 C on the South coast 29 C on the West coast and 27 C over the higher mountains.

Today's temperatures were:

Limassol 32 C -- 23 C

Larnaca 32 C -- 24 C

Paphos 29 C -- 20 C

Prodromos 28 C -- 20 C

The fire hazard remains extremely high in all forest areas.
